Hawks take two from Averett to open conference play

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon baseball team won both games of a doubleheader to open conference play on Saturday.

The Hawks beat Averett 9-7 in the first game and capped the day with a 7-1 win. The two teams are scheduled to wrap up the three-game series at noon on Sunday.

Six players combined for 21 of Huntingdon's 27 hits in the two games and 14 of the Hawks' 15 RBIs.

Tri Overby was 4-for-6 with three RBIs in the doubleheader and Wes Powell was 4-for-8 with an RBI, two runs and three doubles. Will Cosby was 4-for-10 with a solo home run, an RBI, four runs and two doubles. Chris Fisher was 3-for-7 with three RBIs and a run, Colton Clark was 3-for-7 with three RBIs and two runs and Garrett Breland was 3-for-8 with three RBIs and four runs.

In Game 1, Huntingdon (8-0, 2-0 USA South) built a 6-2 lead in the third inning before Averett rallied and tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the seventh when Breland scored on a ground out by Clark. Huntingdon added a final run in the eighth inning when Overby drove in Cosby with a single.

Cosby, who hit a solo home run in his first at-bat of the game, was 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Clark finished the game with three RBIs and a run. Fisher had two hits, two RBIs and a run and Powell had two doubles and an RBI.

Danny Coleman Jr. had two hits and a run and Breland scored twice. Overby and Bradley Harris each had one RBI and Heath Haskins scored one run. Adams Bragg finished with two hits.

Jacob Munn (2-0) picked up the win in one inning of relief and John Crawford earned his second save of the season. Brooks Freeman (3-0) earned the win in Game 2, striking out seven, giving up eight hits, walking one and allowing one earned run in eight innings.

In Game 2, Huntingdon took the lead with three runs in the third inning. The Hawks added three more runs in the fifth inning and a final run in the eighth inning.

Breland was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs in the game and Overby was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Powell had two hits and two runs and Clark had two hits and a run. Fisher drove in one run and Cosby and Andrew Knight each scored one run.
