Pitching carries 22nd-ranked Huntingdon in win over Millsaps

JACKSON, Miss. – The 22^nd-ranked Huntingdon baseball team scored two runs late and used two strong pitching performances to earn a 2-1 win over Millsaps on Tuesday.

Leading by a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, closer John Crawford shut down the Majors. Entering the game with the bases loaded and two outs, Crawford struck out the batter to end the inning. In the ninth inning, Crawford struck out three of the four batters he faced to earn his third save of the season.

Starter John Kelsoe (1-0) picked up the win with seven strong innings of work. Kelsoe struck out three, walked two, scattered five hits and gave up one earned run. After giving up a run and three hits in the first inning, Kelsoe held the Majors hitless in four of the next six innings and did not allow another Millsaps runner to reach scoring position.

After stranding runners in scoring position in two of the first six innings, Huntingdon (10-0) took advantage of its scoring opportunities in the seventh inning. Colton Clark reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by Chris Fisher. Both Clark and Fisher later advanced one base on a wild pitch.

With runners at second and third, Wes Powell bunted to score Clark and tie the game and an error on the play allowed Fisher to score and give the Hawks the lead.

Heath Haskins was the only Hawk with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4.

Coming Up: Huntingdon will host Maryville in a conference series this weekend. Game 1 of the three-game series is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.
