No. 12 Huntingdon wins fifth conference series of the season

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The 12th-ranked Huntingdon baseball team split with Covenant in a doubleheader on Saturday but finished the weekend with another USA South Athletic Conference series win.

Huntingdon lost the first game on Saturday 6-4 before closing the day with a 16-1 win in eight innings. Huntingdon won the first game of the series 12-10 on Friday.

The series win was the fifth for Huntingdon (20-7, 12-5 USA South) in six conference series this season.

Wes Powell, Tri Overby, Garrett Breland, Chris Fisher, Heath Haskins and Colton Clark combined for 18 of Huntingdon's 22 hits in the doubleheader, 11 RBIs and 14 runs.

Powell was 5-for-9 with five runs and an RBI on Saturday and finished the three-game series 7-for-14 with six runs and two RBIs. Breland had three hits and three RBIs on Saturday and finished the series 8-for-14 with seven RBIs, two doubles and a triple. Fisher had three hits and four runs in the final two games and ended the series 7-for-13 with six runs and four RBIs.

Overby was 3-for-6 with three RBIs in the final two games, Haskins had two hits, four RBIs and three runs in the doubleheader and Clark had two hits and two runs on Saturday.

In Saturday's win, Huntingdon scored three runs in the first three innings and added four runs in the fourth inning. Leading 8-1 after six innings, Huntingdon put the game away with four runs in the seventh inning and four runs in the eighth inning.

Powell was 3-for-4 with four runs and an RBI in the game, Fisher was 2-for-5 with three runs, Overby was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two doubles and Clark was 2-for-5 with two runs. Haskins had three RBIs and two runs, Will Cosby had two RBIs and two runs and Adams Bragg had two runs and an RBI. Breland had two RBIs and Bradley Harris scored one run.

Wallace Henry (5-1) earned the win in seven innings. Henry struck out three, walked three, gave up six hits and allowed one run. Josh Stevens pitched the final inning, striking out two, walking one and allowing one hit.

In Saturday's loss, Huntingdon scored two runs in the first inning and two runs in the middle innings to carry a 4-4 tie into the seventh inning. Covenant (12-14, 5-9 USA South) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good.

Powell had two hits and a run in the game and Breland had two hits and an RBI. Haskins drove in one run and scored one run and Fisher and Danny Coleman Jr. each scored one run.

Jacob Munn (2-1) took the loss.
