Hawks beat Belhaven

JACKSON, Miss. – The 17th-ranked Huntingdon baseball team beat Belhaven 14-3 in a seven-inning game on Wednesday.

The Hawks put together 17 hits in the game, scored five runs in the first two innings and closed the game with nine runs in the final three innings.

Tied 2-2 after one inning, Huntingdon (21-7) took the lead for good with three runs in the second inning. Leading 5-3 in the fifth inning, the Hawks began to pull away with a run in the fifth, four runs in the sixth inning and four final runs in the seventh inning.

Garrett Breland was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs and two doubles in the game and Wes Powell was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs. Andrew Knight had two hits and three RBIs, Heath Haskins had two RBIs and two runs and Chris Fisher and Bradley Harris each had two hits and two runs. Will Cosby finished with two RBIs, Colton Clark had two runs and Nick Swisher had two hits.

Ryan Smith (1-0) earned the win in five innings, striking out one, walking two and allowing six hits and three runs. Tucker Duke struck out two, walked one and allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings of relief and Kyle Phillips faced the final two batters of the game, forcing a ground out and a strikeout.
