Huntingdon keeps battling with two wins in USA South Tournament

LAGRANGE, Ga.  – The Huntingdon baseball team won two elimination games on Friday on the second day of the USA South Conference Tournament.

The fourth-seeded Hawks eliminated top-seeded Piedmont 6-3 in their first game of the day and closed the day with a late 8-7 win over second-seeded Methodist in 10-innings.

Huntingdon (24-15) will play sixth-seeded Greensboro (20-17) on Saturday at 2 p.m. (Central).

Heath Haskins and Garrett Breland combined for nine hits in the two games and Breland and Will Cosby combined for six RBIs and four runs. Haskins was 5-for-8 with an RBI, two runs and a double on Friday and Breland was 4-for-8 with three RBIs and two doubles. Cosby had two hits, three RBIs and four runs. Cosby drove in the winning run against Methodist in the bottom of the 10th inning.  

The Monarchs (32-9) used a six-run fourth inning to take the lead against Huntingdon. Trailing 6-2, the Hawks chipped away at Methodist's lead with a run in the fourth, a run in the fifth and a run in the eighth inning before tying the game with two runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Trailing 7-5 in the ninth, Nick Swisher drove in Cosby and Danny Coleman Jr. with a two-out, two-run single. In the 10th, Cosby singled through the right side to drive in Chris Fisher and end the game.

Breland finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two doubles and Haskins was 2-for-4 with a run. Andrew Knight was 2-for-4 with two runs and a double and Swisher was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.        

Cosby had two runs and an RBI, Fisher scored two runs and had an RBI, Bradley Harris drove in one run and Coleman scored one run.

John Crawford (1-2) earned the win in 4 2/3 innings of relief. Crawford struck out three, walked four, gave up one hit and did not allow a run. Starter Carden Mellown went 3 2/3 innings, striking out four, walking two, giving up four hits and six unearned runs. Ryan Smith struck out two, walked one and allowed two hits and one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

In the win over Piedmont, Brooks Freeman (6-3) pitched a complete game, with five strikeouts, four walks and eight hits. Freeman gave up two earned runs and one unearned run in nine innings.

Huntingdon scored five runs in the first two innings and added a final run in the fifth inning to eliminate Piedmont (29-10).

Wes Powell scored on a sacrifice fly by Breland and Cosby scored on a passed ball to give Huntingdon a 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the second inning, Cosby drove in Colton Clark and Powell with a two-run single. Cosby later scored on a double by Haskins to make it a five-run game.

Huntingdon went ahead 6-0 in the fifth inning when Knight drove in Haskins with a single.

Piedmont answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Huntingdon maintained its lead.         

Haskins was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Powell had two hits and two runs, Knight had two hits and an RBI and Cosby had two RBIs and two runs. Breland drove in one run and Clark scored one run.

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play Greensboro in an elimination game on Saturday at 2 p.m. (Central). The winner will advance to play at 5 p.m. (Central) on Saturday.
