Hawks open season with strong performance

DUE TO CURRENT COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, ONLY HUNTINGDON STUDENTS ARE PERMITTED AT OUTDOOR ATHLETIC EVENTS

 

JACKSON, Miss.  – The Huntingdon baseball team beat Edgewood 13-2 in seven innings to open the season on Saturday.

Huntingdon took control early with seven runs in the first three innings and closed the game with six runs in the final three innings.

The Hawks put together 15 hits in the game with Jacob Pitts, Hall Billings and Wes Powell combining for nine hits, six RBIs and four runs. Pitts was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run, Billings was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and Powell was 3-for-6 with two runs, an RBI and two doubles.

Andrew Knight had two hits, three runs, a double and two stolen bases and Colton Clark had two hits, two RBIs, two runs, a double and one stolen base. Nick Swisher scored two runs and had an RBI and Ryan Greene had an RBI double.

Carden Mellown earned the win in four innings, striking out six, walking two and allowing four hits and two runs. Patrick Sawyer struck out three in two innings of relief and Josh Stevens struck out three batters in the seventh inning.

Coming Up: Huntingdon is scheduled to play two games on Sunday in Jackson, Miss. The Hawks play Centenary at 3 p.m. and Belhaven at 7 p.m.
