HUNTINGDON NEWCOMERS SEE ACTION IN SATURDAY’S SCRIMMAGE

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon football coach Mike Turk spent a few extra minutes talking with his newcomers after their first extended scrimmage on Saturday.

The returning players earned a day off after Friday's scrimmage against Mississippi College, allowing the first-year players to go head-to-head in an hour-long scrimmage. With four days left in preseason camp, Turk encouraged his younger players to keep working.

"The biggest thing they have to understand is that we have not made any decisions yet about who is going to Maryville for the season opener, who's not making the trip, who's playing JV or who's not playing JV," Turk said. "Just because they're in a newcomers scrimmage today, all that means is they weren't able to scrimmage on Friday. There is still time in preseason camp to make a move and catch our attention. I want to encourage them to continue to learn what to do and to keep working to get better. The biggest thing is to know what to do and being able to do it full speed."

The first-year players had about 70 plays to show what they could do on Saturday.

"I was pleased with the effort today," Turk said. "It wasn't pretty at times, but that is to be expected. These guys have only been here for 10 days and they've been asked to learn a lot. But it was definitely a good day."

Without singling out any particular players, Turk said he saw good things at almost every position.

"Across the board, we saw someone at just about every position make a play," Turk said. "That's good. There will be a lot of good film to look at and evaluate and for these guys to learn from."

The full team returns to practice on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. Practice is open to the public.
