HUNTINGDON TAKES THE FIELD TWICE ON TUESDAY FOR SEASON’S FIRST TWO-A-DAY SESSION

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon College football team held its first extensive 11-on-11 workout Tuesday morning.

The Hawks practiced for more than two hours in the morning with around 90 minutes dedicated to 11-on-11 work. In the afternoon, the Hawks returned to the field for about an hour to work on the kicking game and various individual drills.

Head coach Mike Turk said the morning practice allowed the coaching staff to get a better look at how some positions are progressing.

"This was the first time we've had a chance to simulate a game-like situation for an extended amount of time," Turk said. "Everything before this has been very controlled. We were able to get the first two groups between 30 and 40 snaps apiece, so this will give us some good film to evaluate. We still have a lot to work on but we had some guys step up and make some plays today."

Defensively, the Hawks were able to apply pressure up front and force a few turnovers. That left Turk with mixed feelings.

"I was pleased and disappointed with the turnovers," Turk said. "The defense was working hard and made some good plays. But this time of year, what's good for your defense is bad for your offense. We also rushed the passer really well. That means our defensive front did a good job but it also means our offensive line has to get better at protecting the quarterback."

Offensively, Turk said he liked what he saw from running back Trevor Manuel and quarterbacks Neal Posey and Ryne Taylor. Turk's highest praise was for the receivers.

The Hawks were without receivers Cody Pearcy, Austin Worley and Tyler Hall for the scrimmage, but the unit still delivered.

"We were without three guys that we normally try to get the ball to and that created some opportunities for some other guys," Turk said. "Those guys seemed to take advantage of their opportunities. That's what playing receiver is all about. When the ball comes your way, you have to make the play."

Turk singled out juniors Del Green and Ephraim Johnson, senior Nick Sheppard, sophomore Tyler Robinson and freshmen Will Tiffin, Brantley Carr and Tyree Thomas for their efforts.

"The way we play and the sets we use, there are going to be at least three receivers in the game for every snap," Turk said. "We have to have a lot of depth and have a lot of guys ready to play a lot of snaps. It's vital that we have depth there and we've got some young guys that we think are going to provide some depth. That's always encouraging."

Huntingdon will practice just once on Wednesday before going twice again on Thursday. Both morning practices will be at 9 a.m. Thursday's afternoon practice is set for 4 p.m. All practices are open to the public.
