Hall and Dykes providing consistency at H-Back for Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon football coach Mike Turk knows it takes time for an offense to develop. Very few teams execute flawlessly during the first days of preseason practice.

Still, almost a week into practice, Turk expects his offense to be further along.

"We're very inconsistent on offense and that bothers me," Turk said. "Some plays we look like we know what we're doing but on others, we're off. It only takes one player to be off and everything looks bad. That's frustrating for everybody. The only way to correct it is for everyone to do their job.

"The priority for us right now is to build consistency, to learn to be unselfish and understand that we're trying to achieve something together as a unit. Our focus needs to be on the big picture and doing our job each play, no matter what. When we get to that point, we've got a chance to be OK. Until we get to that point, we're going to be inconsistent, erratic and not very good."

One position where consistency hasn't been a problem is H-Back. The hybrid position, that is a cross between fullback and tight end, is anchored by seniors Tyler Hall and Cody Dykes.

"H-Back is probably as solid a position as we have as far as the front-line guys go," Turk said. "We've got two guys that have played a lot of ball for us and made plays for us. Both of them are versatile guys and each of them brings something different to the table. Both of them can block, both of them can catch and both of them are leaders. They're a big part of what we do and we're blessed to have them."

Hall caught 14 passes for 218 yards and two touchdowns in seven games last year before an injury cut his season short. Dykes pulled in nine receptions for 128 yards last season.

"Having two guys that do their jobs the right way and have been through the amount of battles these two have been through, it sets an example for the younger guys and that is invaluable," Turk said.

The Hawks will hold their seventh practice at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Practice is open to the public.
