Huntingdon names team captains for football

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Five seniors will represent the Huntingdon football team as captains this season.

Defensive linemen D.J. Chappell and Courtney Moss, quarterback Neal Posey, running back Trevor Manuel and receiver Austin Worley were selected by a vote of the players.

"It's a big honor to be looked upon as a team captain," Chappell said. "We try to be leaders, but it means a lot when your teammates choose you for a position like this."

Head coach Mike Turk said being named team captain is more than just an indication of how talented a player is.

"To me, being voted a team captain by your teammates is the highest honor you can receive as a football player," Turk said. "I think each of those five guys is deserving of being a captain. Each of them has paid his dues and they're all good players.

"But it's more than that. It's the way they handle their business and encourage their teammates. They set a great example and I'm proud to have them representing us."

Moss said the captains understand both the honor and the responsibility that comes with the title.

"During the season, there are always days when it's a grind," Moss said. "Those are the days when leadership is needed most. Part of a captain's job is to set the tone and set the bar high."

The Hawks had Monday off from practice but return to the field on Tuesday and will hold a final preseason scrimmage on Wednesday. The season begins on Sept. 1 as Huntingdon hosts Maryville at 1 p.m.
