Huntingdon’s Manuel named MVP of D3 Senior Classic

SALEM, Va. – Huntingdon running back Trevor Manuel had high expectations for himself in Friday night's D3 Senior Classic.

Sharing time in a backfield that included the leading scorer and the second leading scorer in Division III this season, Manuel quickly became the star of the game. Manuel rushed for twice as many yards as any other back in the game and scored three touchdowns, including the first two touchdowns for the South team, in a 37-21 win over the North.

Manuel was named MVP of the game for his performance.

"It's a good feeling to be able to play like that against the top players in Division III," Manuel said. "All of the backs in the game were good and had things they did well. I just tried to take advantage of my opportunity when it came along."

Manuel rushed for a game-high 54 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. He also had one reception for 24 yards. His touchdown runs covered three, one and three yards.

"He deserved it and I'm happy for him," said Huntingdon senior defensive lineman D.J. Chappell, who also played in the game. "Trevor has success because he works hard. He showed he can play against the best."

Huntingdon head coach Mike Turk said the game was a good opportunity for Manuel and Chappell to measure themselves against some of the top players in Division III.

"It's a great accomplishment for Trevor. I talked to him after the game and he was excited," Turk said. "I'm proud of both our guys. They were playing against some of the best competition in Division III and they both performed well.

"Chap had the challenge of learning a new position in a new defensive scheme in just two days. But he handled it. He is a good player and he has the ability to play well no matter what position he plays."

Chappell, who plays defensive tackle in Huntingdon's four-man front, played defensive end in the All-Star's three-man front. He finished the game with two tackles

"It was a good experience," Chappell said. "It was different to me. I didn't get to make a lot of tackles, but I was able to play a lot of snaps and I felt like I had a solid performance. The main thing is it was fun to play well and be part of the winning team."
