Brownell selected as USA South Defensive Player of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon linebacker Zach Brownell was named a USA South Athlete of the Week on Monday.

The senior was named the Football Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 42-6 win over Averett on Saturday. This is the second time the Prattville native has been recognized by the conference in the past three weeks. Brownell was also named conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Ferrum.

In Saturday's win over Averett, Brownell finished the game with 13 tackles and a tackle for loss in a little more than three quarters of play. He recorded eight tackles and a tackle for loss in the first half.

This was the fifth time in seven games this season that Brownell has recorded double-digit tackles. Despite missing the first two games of the season, he leads the USA South with 68 solo tackles, is third in the conference with 87 total tackles and leads the conference with 12.4 tackles per game.

Entering this past weekend, Brownell's 12.4 tackles per game ranked seventh nationally in Division III.

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Marcus Morrast, Christopher Newport - The senior quarterback from Stafford, Virginia had a hand in four touchdowns as the Captains defeated USA South foe Maryville, 37-27, to clinch the USA South Championship. Morrast was 11-of-22 passing for 207 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, Morrast rushed for 45 yards and one score. Also Nominated: Malik Adams, N.C. Wesleyan; Ed Johnson, Maryville.

Football Defensive Player of the Week
Zach Brownell, Huntingdon - The Prattville, Alabama senior linebacker tallied 13 total tackles and helped the Hawk defense hold USA South foe Averett to just six points in a 42-6 victory. Brownell notched nine solo tackles and four assisted take downs, including one tackle for loss, in the victory. Also Nominated: Micah Smith, Maryville; Ben Harris, Averett; Tyrell Eaton, Christopher Newport.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Mason Studer, Christopher Newport - The Norfolk, Virginia senior place kicker/punter connected on all three of his field goal attempts, each of his four point after touchdowns and averaged 38.3 yards per punt in a 37-27 victory over USA South foe Maryville which clinched the USA South Championship for the Captains. His field goal makes were from 21, 27 and a school-record 50 yards out. Also Nominated: Codan Breckenridge, N.C. Wesleyan.

Jaylon Johnson, N.C. Wesleyan - The Virginia Beach, Virginia freshman defensive back accumulated four tackles, an interception and a forced fumble in a 31-6 victory over USA South rival Greensboro. Johnson tallied three solo tackles and one assisted take down in the win. Also Nominated: Tyre King, Christopher Newport.
