Iwaniec and DeJianne named USA South Athletes of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon's John Iwaniec and Tyler DeJianne were recognized as two of the USA South Athletes of the Week on Monday.

Iwaniec, a junior running back, was named the Football Offensive Player of the Week, and DeJianne, a freshman midfielder, was named the Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week.

In a 56-35 win over Louisiana College, Iwaniec averaged 11.9 yards per carry as he turned in a career-high 179 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. His third carry of the game resulted in a 66-yard touchdown. Iwaniec's 179 yards were the fifth most rushing yards in a game by a Hawk and his three rushing touchdowns were one short of the school record for a game. As a team, the Hawks finished with 392 rushing yards, the third highest total in school history.

DeJianne opened his Huntingdon career with a strong start, scoring two goals and making one assist in his first three games. In a season-opening 2-1 loss to Birmingham-Southern, DeJianne scored his first collegiate goal. In a 2-0 win over Hendrix, DeJianne had an assist on the Hawks' first goal before scoring the second goal.

Football Offensive Player of the Week
John Iwaniec, Huntingdon -The junior running back from Crystal River, Florida rushed for 179 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 56-35 victory over Louisiana College last week. Iwaniec carried the ball 15 times for an average of 11.9 yards per rush with a long gain of 66 yards. Also Nominated: Josh Hardrick, LaGrange; Brandon Couden, Averett; Trenton Shuler, Maryville. 

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Mario Williams, Maryville - The freshman wide receiver from Columbia, Tennessee accumulated 79 yards of total offense with one touchdown i-n a 43-17 victory over Berry. Williams caught two passes for 63 yards including a 58-yard touchdown. He also ran the ball twice for 16 total yards. Also Nominated: Antwone Vance, N.C. Wesleyan; Jaytarius Steele, Huntingdon; Dylan DeGroot, Methodist; D'Monte Bailey, Averett. 

Football Defensive Player of the Week
Gabe Johnson, Maryville - The Villa Rica, Georgia senior defensive back recorded five total tackles, 1.5 for lost yardage with an interception with he returned for a touchdown, as the Scots posted a 43-17 win over Berry last week. Johnson's interception ended all hopes of a comeback as he snagged the ball on Maryville's own 20 yard line and returned it 80 yards for the score. Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
LaDarius Jordan, Maryville - The freshman defensive back from Memphis, Tennessee grabbed two interceptions and made one tackle in a 43-17 win over Berry. Jordan's interceptions came on back-to-back defensive series. His first career pickoff was in the end zone, thwarting a possible score. Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Malik Adams, N.C.Wesleyan - The Selma, North Carolina junior wide receiver returned two kickoffs for a total of 109 yards which led to eventual scores by the Bishops in a 20-9 loss to Stevenson. His returns were good for 66 and 43 yards. Also Nominated: Patrick Goodin, LaGrange; Chase Young, Huntingdon; Carlos McCracken, Methodist; Max Peets, Maryville.

 

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Eirik Nordseth, Methodist - The senior forward from Steinkjer, Norway tallied five goals with one assist in a 2-0-1 week for the Monarchs. In a 3-2 win at Lynchburg, Nordseth scored the match's first goal then assisted on the second. In a 3-2 victory over Grove City, Nordseth tallied a hat trick with three goals including the game-winner in the 84th minute. Finally, in a 1-1 tie with Geneva, Nordseth notched the team's only score in the 84th minute. Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Thomas Palmer, Maryville - The junior defender from Kingsport, Tennessee tallied three goals in a 2-1 week for the Scots. In a 7-0 win over Emory & Henry, the Scot defense allowed five shots on goal. In a 2-1 win over Centre, Palmer scored the team's first goal of the match on a free kick. In a 4-2 loss to 24th-ranked Montclair State, Palmer notched two goals, one of which came on a penalty kick. Also Nominated: Alex Brown, Huntingdon; Jov Hall, Averett; Kenneth Hearn, Piedmont.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Tyler DeJianne, Huntingdon -The freshman midfielder from Yorba Linda, California tallied two goals with one assist as the Hawks posted a 1-2 record. In a 2-1 loss to Birmingham Southern, DeJianne scored the team's one goal of the match. In a 2-0 victory over Hendrix, DeJianne assisted on the eventual game-winning goal before notching a score of his own. Finally, in a 2-1 loss to Spalding, DeJianne recorded one shot. Also Nominated: Haakan Walhstrom, Methodist; Ville Hautakangas, Averett; Thomas Whiting, Maryville; Cullen Copland, Piedmont.

 

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Lauren Greeson, GreensboroThe Greensboro, North Carolina junior forward tallied seven goals with one assist in a 2-0 week for the Pride. In a 14-0 victory over Hollins, Greeson notched five scores including the eventual game-winning goal. In a 6-0 win over Wesleyan, Greeson tallied two scores, one of which was the eventual game-winning goal. Also Nominated: Chloe Hudson, Ferrum; Samantha Litt, Meredith; Kira Bohlke, Huntingdon; Sierra Siegel, Maryville; Cassidy Reich, Piedmont.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Michaela Gardner, Piedmont - The McDonough, Georgia senior goalkeeper helped the Lions to a 3-0 record last week by collecting 13 saves while allowing just one goal in 249 minutes in net. In a 7-0 win over Agnes Scott, Gardner played the first 69 minutes and made two saves. In a 2-0 victory over Birmingham Southern, Gardner stopped all eight shots she faced en route to a shutout. Finally, in a 2-1 win over Bridgewater, Gardner collected three saves. 

 Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week

Cassidy Reich, Piedmont - The Largo, Florida freshman forward helped the Lions to a 3-0 record by scoring three goals with three assists. In a 7-0 win over Agnes Scott, Reich scored one goal and added three assists. In a 2-0 victory over Birmingham Southern, Reich scored an insurance goal in the 66th minute. Finally, in a 2-1 win over Bridgewater, Reich scored the game-winning goal in the 81st minute. Also Nominated: Catelyn Gamble, Ferrum; Jessica Wallace, Meredith; Leah Leach, Huntingdon; Bailee Brown, Averett; Amanda Hayes, Methodist; Taylor Wipf, Maryville.

 

Volleyball Player of the Week
Hannah Shields, Averett - The sophomore outside hitter from Keeling, Virginia averaged 4.95 kills, with a .234 hitting percentage, 2.55 digs and 0.86 service aces per set as the Cougars posted a 5-1 record last week. In a 3-1 win over Southern Virginia, Shields notched a double-double of 28 kills and ten digs with five service aces and two assists. In a 3-2 victory over Washington & Lee, Shields totaled 16 kills, two digs and two service aces. In a 3-1 win over Emory & Henry, Shields notched a double-double of 19 kills and 23 digs to go along with four service aces and one block. In a 3-0 loss to Shenandoah, Shields tallied 12 kills, nine digs and one service ace. In a 3-1 victory over Guilford, Shields contributed 20 kills, eight digs, three service aces and one assist. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Hollins, Shields totaled 14 kills, four digs, four service aces and one assist. Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Karly Klimas, Methodist - The senior defensive specialist from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina averaged 4.39 digs per set as the Monarchs posted a 4-1 record. She also added 11 total service aces and ten total assists last week. In a 3-0 win over Guilford, Klimas totaled nine digs, three service aces and one assist. In a 3-1 victory over Eastern Mennonite, Klimas contributed 26 digs, five assists and three service aces. In a 3-0 win over Goucher, Klimas tallied 18 digs, one service ace and one assist. In a 3-2 victory over Hood, Klimas totaled 13 digs, four service aces and one assist. Finally, in a 3-0 loss to Catholic, Klimas notched 13 digs with two assists. Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Keenan Marks, Averett - The freshman setter from Jacksonville, North Carolina averaged 9.88 assists and 1.94 digs per set as the Cougars posted a 5-1 record. In a 3-1 win over Southern Virginia, Marks notched 46 assists, eight digs, one kill and one service ace. In a 3-2 victory over Washington & Lee, Marks totaled 36 assists, seven digs, two blocks and one service ace. In a 3-1 win over Emory & Henry, Marks did not see any action. In a 3-0 loss to Shenandoah, Marks tallied ten assists, five digs and one service ace. In a 3-1 victory over Guilford, Marks contributed 38 assists, six digs, three kills and one block. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Hollins, Marks totaled 28 assists and five digs. Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Jarrod Howell, Piedmont - The freshman from Marietta, Georgia placed 40th out of 47 runners at the Western Carolina Invitational last week. Piedmont was the lone Division-III team at the event. Howell completed the 5K course in a time of 17:35, helping the Lions to a fifth place team finish. Also Nominated: Graham Massot, Covenant; Sean Hagstrom, Maryville.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week

Reese Bowles, Piedmont - The sophomore from Jefferson, Georgia placed 38th out of 54 runners at the Western Carolina Invitational last week. Piedmont was the lone Division-III team at the event. Bowles completed the two-mile course in a time of 12:55, helping the Lions to a fifth place team finish. Also Nominated: Ruthie Cargill, Covenant; Macy Brinson, Meredith; Emily Guilliame, Maryville.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Macy Brinson, Meredith - The freshman from Emerald Isle, North Carolina first out of 22 runners in a dual meet with William Peace. Brinson completed the 3K course in a time of 12:03, helping the Avenging Angels win the meet. Also Nominated: Sarah Grossman, N.C. Wesleyan; Hannah Samuels, Covenant; Kali Carr, Mary Baldwin; Shelbee Knopf, Methodist; Mackenzie Devine, Piedmont.
