White chosen as USA South Defensive Player of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon senior Anthony White was named one of the USA South Athletes of the Week on Monday.

The Montgomery native and Robert E. Lee High School graduate was recognized as the Football Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in a 42-6 win over Methodist.

White intercepted two passes in the game, returning one 100 yards for a touchdown and the other 23 yards to set up a touchdown. He also recorded three tackles.

In the first quarter, with Huntingdon leading 7-0 and Methodist at the Hawks' 6-yard line, White picked off a pass at the goal line and set a school record with the 100-yard return. In the second quarter, White made an interception at the Methodist 39 and returned it to the Monarchs' 16. After the interception, Huntingdon scored in two plays to take a 21-3 lead.

White currently leads the USA South with five interceptions this season. For his career, he ranks third in Huntingdon history with 11 interceptions and is sixth in program history with 202 tackles.

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Dustin Midgett, N.C. Wesleyan - The senior quarterback from Currituck, North Carolina set a new single-game program record with 412 passing yards in a 61-36 victory over USA South rival Greensboro last week. Midgett was 23-of-39 with three touchdowns and one interception. He averaged 10.6 yards per attempt with a long pass of 56 yards. Also Nominated: Terrance Owens II, Averett; Evan Pittenger, Maryville; Luke Bailey, Huntingdon; Raymond Bridges, Greensboro.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Adrian Minondo, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman running back from Okeechobee, Florida rushed for 134 yards with four touchdowns in a 61-36 victory over USA South foe Greensboro last week. Minondo ran the ball 22 times for an average of 6.1 yards per attempt with a long rush of 22 yards. He also caught one pass for nine yards. The four rushing touchdowns were one shy of the single-game program record. Also Nominated: Sean Bowman, Averett; Tyler Rowland, LaGrange; Mario Williams, Maryville.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Anthony White, Huntingdon 
- The Montgomery, Alabama senior defensive back intercepted two passes in a 42-6 victory over USA South rival Methodist last week. His first interception came in the first quarter and was returned 100 yards for a touchdown to set a program-record for the longest interception return in a game. His second interception was returned 23 yards and set up Huntingdon's third touchdown of the game. Finally, White also recorded three tackles in the win. Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Ti'Shawn Ferguson-Daniels, Averett - The freshman linebacker from Lenoir, North Carolina totaled eight tackles and one sack in a 31-26 loss to USA South foe Maryville last week. Ferguson-Daniels tallied five solo tackles with three assisted take downs. The one sack resulted in a loss of six yards. Also Nominated: Sam Solomon, Ferrum; Ron McGriff, Maryville.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Brandon Torres, Methodist - The Clewiston, Florida freshman place kicker accounted for all of the Monarchs scoring with two field goals in a 42-6 loss at Huntingdon last week. Torres was 2-for-2 as he first hit from 26 yards before booming a new USA South record 51-yarder. Also Nominated: Hobie Proctor, Averett; Chris Richardson, N.C. Wesleyan; Kyle Bennett, Maryville.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
Shaun Watt, Greensboro - The junior forward from Montreal, Quebec tallied five goals in a 3-0 week for the Pride versus USA South competition. In a 1-0 win over Covenant, Watt scored the match's only goal in the 65th minute. In a 4-3 victory over Maryville, Watt notched the game-winner in the 81st minute. Finally, in a 4-1 win over Piedmont, Watt tallied a hat trick with three goals. Also Nominated: Caleb Lucas, Maryville; Caetano Viegas, N.C. Wesleyan; Mike Arango, Covenant; Eirik Nordseth, Methodist; Brendon Van Emelen, Huntingdon.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Alex Rabone, Methodist - The sophomore goalkeeper from Dubai, UAE accumulated three shutouts in 270 minutes in net as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 6-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Rabone stopped all three shots he faced. In a pair of 4-0 wins over LaGrange and Huntingdon, Rabone pushed aside one shot in each victory. Also Nominated: Jaime Payamps, Greensboro; Alex Brown, Huntingdon; Hayden Puryear, Maryville.

Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Fredrik Aalberg, Methodist - The freshman forward from Levanger, Norway tallied three goals and one assist in a 3-0 week for the Monarchs versus USA South competition. In a 6-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Aalberg scored twice including the first goal of the match. In a 4-0 victory over LaGrange, Aalberg was held scoreless but did manage two shots. Finally, in a 4-0 win over Huntingdon, Aalberg totaled one goal and one assist. Also Nominated: Carl Simakoff, Covenant; Nathan Metzger, Piedmont; George Davies, Maryville; Olafur Einarsson, N.C. Wesleyan; Carlos Barragan, Greensboro.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Cassidy Reich, Piedmont - The Largo, Florida freshman forward tallied all five goals scored by the Lions last week in a 2-0 week versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over Ferrum, Reich tallied a hat trick with three scores. In a 2-0 victory over Greensboro, Reich notched goals in the 31st and 53rd minutes. Also Nominated: Marissa Aguilar, N.C. Wesleyan; Sierra Siegel, Maryville; Jasmine Newman, Methodist; Meredith McCarty, Meredith.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Michaela Gardner, Piedmont - The Stockbridge, Georgia senior goalkeeper led the Lions to a 2-0 record versus USA South competition last week by stopping all four shots she faced during 175 minutes in net. In a 3-0 win over Ferrum, Gardner made three saves en route to posting a shutout. In a 2-0 victory over Greensboro, Gardner collected one save in 85 minutes played. Also Nominated: Nicole Liette, N.C. Wesleyan; Mackenzie Hutton, Maryville; Taylor Ross, Methodist; Megan Luke, Meredith.

Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week

Volleyball Player of the Week
Hannah Shields, Averett - The sophomore outside hitter from Keeling, Virginia averaged 4.80 kills and 3.10 digs per set in a 3-0 week versus USA South competition for the Cougars. In a 3-0 win over Mary Baldwin, Shields played just two sets and totaled 11 kills, three digs and one block. In a 3-2 victory over Huntingdon, Shields tallied a double-double of 20 kills and 13 digs to go along with three service aces and one block. Finally, in a 3-0 victory over LaGrange, Shields notched a double-double of 17 kills and 15 digs to go along with one service ace and one block. Also Nominated: Mallory Leary, Piedmont; Karlie Long, Meredith; Chelsea VanDyk, Covenant; Audrianna Hargitt, Huntingdon; Shayla Moss, Greensboro; Cassidy Hayes, Methodist.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Karly Klimas, Methodist - The senior defensive specialist from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina averaged 5.25 digs per set as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over William Peace, Klimas totaled 18 digs. In a 3-1 victory over Piedmont, Klimas tallied 13 digs, three assists and three service aces. Finally, in a 3-2 win over Meredith, Klimas notched 32 digs, one assist and one service ace. Also Nominated: Katelyn Durmire, Piedmont; Lindsey Boles, Averett; Emery McGee, Meredith; Kaitlyn Flickinger, Maryville; Lauren Condon, Huntingdon; Tori Belcher, Greensboro.

Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Jordan Tew, Methodist - The freshman outside hitter from Roseboro, North Carolina averaged 3.42 kills and 1.83 digs per set as the Monarchs posted a 3-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over William Peace, Tew totaled 15 kills, nine digs, three service aces and one block. In a 3-1 victory over Piedmont, Tew tallied 15 kills, six digs and two blocks. Finally, in a 3-2 win over Meredith, Tew notched 11 kills, seven digs and two blocks.
