Bailey named USA South Offensive Player of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon quarterback Luke Bailey was named a USA South Athlete of the Week on Monday.

Bailey, a junior from Fairview, Ala., was named Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Maryville College.

With the conference title on the line, Bailey put on a winning performance in the 38-14 victory over Maryville. Bailey had a hand in all five touchdowns for the Hawks, passing for four and running for one. He was 19-for-25 (76 percent) for 256 passing yards and no interceptions.

Bailey put Huntingdon on the board first with an 11-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter. Bailey finished with 13 rushes for 31 yards.

Bailey hit Blake Malter for a 27-yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks up 17-0 in the second quarter. Bailey threw three more touchdowns in the second half. He connected with Nick Haas in the third quarter for a 6-yard touchdown pass. In the fourth, Bailey threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Willie Coleman and hit Haas with a 29-yard touchdown pass to go up 38-7.

Bailey ranks second in the USA South with 22 touchdown passes this season. Among starting quarterbacks, his five interceptions are the fewest in the conference. 

Huntingdon will host Averett on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Samford Stadium

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Luke Bailey, Huntingdon - The junior quarterback from Fairview, Alabama accumulated five total touchdowns and 287 yards of offense in a 38-14 win over USA South foe Maryville last week to clinch the USA South championship. Bailey was 19-of-25 for 256 yards passing with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He also carried the ball 13 times for 31 yards and one score. Also Nominated: Malik Adams, N.C. Wesleyan; Kelly Hall, Averett; Connor Blair, LaGrange; Kenneth Purvis, Greensboro; Emontie Dears, Methodist.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Adrian Minondo, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman running back from Okeechobee, Florida rushed for 207 yards with two touchdowns in a 48-31 victory over USA South foe LaGrange last week. Minondo ran the ball 38 times for an average of 5.4 yards per attempt. Also Nominated: Sean Bowman, Averett; Dylan DeGroot, Methodist.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Micah McMaster, Greensboro - The High Point, North Carolina senior defensive back totaled a team-high 14 tackles, recovered a fumble and broke-up a pass in a 26-22 victory over USA South rival Methodist last week. McMaster accumulated seven solo tackles and seven assisted take downs, one of which was for a 14-yard loss. Also Nominated: Jake Salisbury, Averett; Montel Lee, Ferrum; Anthony White, Huntingdon; Bryan Bing, Methodist.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Trevor Campbell, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman defensive back from Lakeland, Florida totaled four tackles, a fumble recovery, an interception and a pass break-up in a 48-31 win over USA South foe LaGrange last week. Campbell tallied three solo tackles with one assisted take down, including one tackle for a loss of six yards. His interception eventually led to N.C. Wesleyan's second touchdown of the day. Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Chase Bailey, Averett - The Culpeper, Virginia sophomore place kicker nailed a 35-yarder in overtime to give the Cougars a 31-28 victory over USA South foe Ferrum last week. Bailey was 1-for-2 on the day kicking field goals but was a perfect 4-for-4 with extra point attempts. Also Nominated: Chris Richardson, N.C. Wesleyan; Brandon Torres, Methodist.
