White named to AP Little All-America team

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The postseason accolades continue for Huntingdon senior Anthony White.

White, who was named an honorable mention All-American safety by D3football.com on Friday, has also been named a second-team defensive back on the AP Little All-America team. The AP team is comprised of Division II, Division III and NAIA players.

"This is quite an honor for Anthony and he is very deserving of all the recognition he is receiving," Huntingdon head coach Mike Turk said. "To be just the second Huntingdon player to receive this recognition is special and is quite an achievement. Anthony has been such a key player for us and has meant so much to our program. It's nice to see him recognized at the national level."

White joins former defensive lineman D.J. Chappell as the only Huntingdon players to be named to the Little All-America team. Chappell earned first-team honors in 2012.

"This recognition means a lot to me," White said. "It means a lot to accomplish something that only one other Huntingdon player has done, especially when it's a player like D.J. Chappell. He was a positive role model and someone I looked up to as a freshman."

White was also named as a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award this week. The Cliff Harris Award, which was introduced in 2013, recognizes the top small college defensive player in Division II, Division III and NAIA.

White is the first Huntingdon player to be named a finalist for the award. The overall winner and the top vote getters from each division will be announced on Thursday.

This week's recognitions are just the latest for the USA South Defensive Player of the Year. White, a three-time, first-team All-Conference selection, was named second-team All-South Region in early December.

As a senior, the Montgomery native recorded eight interceptions and led Division III with 252 interception return yards. He finished one interception short of the national lead and the Huntingdon single-season record.

White also had 52 tackles, broke up eight passes, forced one fumble, recovered one fumble and recorded a safety. His 100-yard interception return for a touchdown against Methodist was the longest scoring play in Huntingdon history. He also returned an onside-kick 45 yards for a touchdown against Averett.

For his career, White ranks third in Huntingdon history with 234 total tackles and 14 interceptions and second with 154 solo tackles.
