Hawks select football team captains

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Huntingdon head coach Mike Turk officially announced the football team captains on Thursday.

Five seniors were selected from a vote of their teammates. The 2016 captains are quarterback Luke Bailey, running back John Iwaniec and defensive linemen Heath McCray, Octavis Harris and Drew Wheeler.

"These five players are all very deserving guys," Turk said. "They are the leaders of our football team. I believe these guys will handle that responsibility well. They have so far in the things they done and the way they've conducted themselves to earn the status of captain.

"I'm excited for them because it is truly an honor to be selected by your teammates. I think this is the highest honor you can receive as an athlete."

Turk also said he is impressed with the overall leadership of this senior class. With 31 seniors, it is the largest senior class in the history of the football program.

"The great thing is, beyond the captains, we have a lot of other leaders as well," Turk said. "We probably had more players receive votes this year than ever before. With a large senior class, maybe that is to be expected. But it also speaks to how many of these seniors are viewed by their teammates. We have a lot of guys being leaders and trying to do the things that will help this team get to where it wants to be."

Huntingdon opens the season on Sept. 3 at Louisiana College. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
