Hayes named USA South Athlete of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon's Trey Hayes was named an USA South Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week on Monday.

The sophomore linebacker earned Football Defensive Player of the Week honors with his performance in Saturday's 55-13 win over LaGrange. The 13-points allowed are a season low for the Hawks.

The Decatur, Ala. native led the Huntingdon defense with 10 tackles and one interception. His second quarter interception helped set up the Hawks third touchdown of the game.

On the season, Hayes has recorded 54 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and two interceptions.

FOOTBALL

Football Offensive Player of the Week
Sean Bowman, Averett - The sophomore running back from Creedmoor, South Carolina ran for 194 yards and three touchdowns in a 52-6 victory over USA South foe Greensboro. Bowman carried the ball 21 times for 9.2 yards per rush. Additionally, he caught one pass for four yards. Also Nominated: Nick Myers, Maryville.
Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Gianni Montgomery, Maryville - The freshman running back from Mableton, Georgia compiled 121 all-purpose yards in a 42-19 win over USA South foe Ferrum. Montgomery carried the ball once for six yards, caught five passes for 83 yards and returned two kickoffs for 32 yards. Also Nominated: Rahim Mateen, Averett.
Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Trey Hayes, Huntingdon - The Decatur, Alabama sophomore linebacker collected ten total tackles and one interception in a 55-13 victory over USA South foe LaGrange. Hayes recorded seven solo tackles and three assisted takedowns. He returned his interception 23 yards and set up a second quarter Hawk touchdown. Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Cedric Brown, Maryville - The freshman linebacker from Memphis, Tennessee totaled seven tackles including two and a half for a total loss of seven yards in a 42-19 victory over USA South rival Ferrum. Brown collected two solo tackles and five assisted take downs in the win. Also Nominated: Brandon Williams, Huntingdon; Ronnie Beatty, Averett.
Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Travis Jones, Averett - The Danville, Virginia junior running back returned the game's opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown in a 52-6 win over USA South foe Greensboro. Jones compiled 265 all-purpose yards as he totaled 42 yards rushing, 28 yards receiving which included a touchdown catch, 63 yards of punt returns and 132 yards of kickoff returns. MEN'S SOCCER

Men's Soccer Player of the Week
A.J. Wadda, N.C. Wesleyan - The junior midfielder from Fredericksburg, Virginia tallied four goals and one assist in a 3-0 week for the Bishops versus USA South competition. In a 5-1 victory over William Peace, Wadda did not play due to injury. In a 4-1 win over Huntingdon, Wadda notched a hat trick with three goals, including the eventual game-winner. Finally, in a 7-1 victory over LaGrange, Wadda assisted on the eventual game-winning goal while also scoring one of his own. Also Nominated: Tobias Andreasson, Averett; Tim Baker, Maryville; Carlos Barragan, Greensboro.
Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Nathan Metzger, Piedmont - The sophomore defender from Auckland, New Zealand posted a tallied a game-winning goal during a 1-1 week for the Lions versus USA South competition. In a 3-2, overtime, win over Ferrum, Metzger headed-in the game-winner in the 94th minute off of a corner kick. In a 2-1 loss to Greensboro, Metzger helped the Piedmont defense hold the Pride to six shots on goal. Also Nominated: Thomas Palmer, Maryville; Jaime Payamps, Greensboro.
Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Kobi Boompong, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman midfielder from Bakoteh, The Gambia notched three goals and two assists in a 3-0 week for the Bishops versus USA South competition. In a 5-1 win over William Peace, Boompong scored twice, including the eventual game-winner, and added an assist. In a 4-1 win over Huntingdon, Boompong was held scoreless with two shots. Finally, in a 7-1 victory over LaGrange, Boompong assisted on the game's opening score before notching the eventual game winning goal in the 14th minute. WOMEN'S SOCCER 

Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Savannah Castles, Piedmont - The Helen, Georgia senior midfielder tallied two game-winning goals in a 2-0 week for the Lions versus USA South competition. In a 2-0 win over Huntingdon, Castles tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the tenth minute. In a 1-0 victory over LaGrange, Castles notched the contest's lone goal in the 59th minute. Also Nominated: Annalies Jobsis, Averett; Natasha Enrique, Maryville; Chloe Hudson, Ferrum; Logan Bill, N.C. Wesleyan; Jessica Wallace, Meredith; Anna Porch, Covenant.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Kaitlyn Winking, Covenant - The Waynesville, Missouri senior defender anchored a Scot defense which posted three shutouts in a 3-0 week versus USA South competition. In wins over Maryville, Wesleyan and Agnes Scott, the Covenant defense allowed a total of two shots on goal. The Scot defense currently boasts a shutout streak of 564 minutes. Additionally, in a 3-0 win over Wesleyan, Winking scored a goal in the 44th minute off of a shot from 25 yards out. Also Nominated: Bailee Brown, Averett; Miranda Lukas, Maryville; Brittany Tenn, Mary Baldwin; Marissa Akin, Piedmont; Ashley Major, N.C. Wesleyan; Kirstie King, Meredith; Morgan Canepa, Salem.
Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Taylor Dodson, Ferrum - The Warrenton, Virginia freshman goalkeeper stopped all four shots she faced and posted a shutout in a 1-0 victory over USA South rival N.C. Wesleyan, her only appearance last week in goal for the Panthers. Dodson did not play in a 6-0 victory over USA South foe Mary Baldwin. Also Nominated: T'era Brown, Averett; Victoria Burkhart, N.C. Wesleyan; Devin D'Agostin, Greensboro; Kayla Boudreau, Meredith.
 

VOLLEYBALL 

Volleyball Player of the Week
Ginny Moore, Covenant - The junior outside hitter from Fort Myers, Florida averaged 3.85 kills and 4.46 digs per set as the Scots posted a 3-1 record last week. In a 3-0 win over USA South foe LaGrange, Moore posted seven kills, 11 digs, five service aces and three assists. In a 3-1 loss to nationally-ranked Hendrix, Moore notched a double-double of 15 kills and 12 digs with two blocks, one assist and one service ace. In a 3-0 victory over Rhodes, Moore tallied a double-double of ten kills and 21 digs to go along with two blocks and two assists. Finally, in a 3-0 win over Oglethorpe, Moore posted a double-double of 18 kills and 14 digs with three assists. Also Nominated: Hannah Blaylock, Meredith; Kylie Taffer, Salem; Hannah Shields, Averett; Abrianna Jones, Maryville; Brandy Johnson, Greensboro; Amanda Trotter, Piedmont; Laura Bland, William Peace.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
Haley Hixon, Piedmont - The sophomore libero from Ringgold, Georgia averaged 6.40 digs per set as the Lions posted a 3-0 record last week. In a 3-0 win over Emory & Henry, Hixon totaled 16 digs, two service aces and one assist. In a 3-0 win over USA South foe Salem, Hixon notched 22 digs, three service aces, two kills and two assists. Finally, in a 3-1 victory over USA South rival Huntingdon, Hixon posted 26 digs, one assist and one service ace. Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Caroline Corey, Meredith - The freshman outside hitter from Greenville, South Carolina averaged 3.83 kills, with a .316 hitting percentage, and 2.33 digs per set as the Avenging Angels posted a 2-0 record last week versus USA South competition. In a 3-0 win over William Peace, Corey totaled a double-double of 17 kills and 13 digs. In a 3-0 win over Ferrum, Corey posted six kills, one dig and one block. Also Nominated: Lainey Choiniere, Piedmont; Hannah Delcamp, Salem; Brianna Williams, Averett; Mya Parks, William Peace.

Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Daniel Beckett, Maryville - The freshman from Oak Ridge, Tennessee placed 42nd out of 189 runners at the Berry College Invitational last week. Beckett completed the 8K course in a time of 27:24 helping the Scots to a 14th place team finish. Also Nominated: Nathan Galloway, Piedmont; Micah Sneller, Covenant.

Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Reese Bowles, Piedmont - The junior from Jefferson, Georgia placed 16th out of 177 runners at the Berry College Invitational last week. Bowles completed the 6K course in a time of 23:54, helping the Lions to a seventh place team finish. Also Nominated: Lilly Smith, Covenant; Lindsay Sopko, Mary Baldwin.

Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week
Casey Todd, Piedmont - The freshman from Decatur, Georgia placed 44th out of 69 runners at the Berry College Invitational last week. Todd completed the 6K course in a time of 25:01, helping the Lions to a seventh place team finish. Also Nominated: Anna Danek, Covenant; Susanna Cook, Maryville.
