Hayes and Williams named USA South Athletes of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Huntingdon's Trey Hayes and Brandon Williams were named USA South Athletes of the Week on Monday.

Hayes, a sophomore linebacker, was named Football Defensive Player of the Week while Williams, a freshman linebacker, was named Football Defensive Rookie of the Week.

Both linebackers helped a Huntingdon defense hold Maryville to 24 points in a 28-24 win this past weekend.

Hayes, a native of Decatur, Ala., recorded a career-high with 14 tackles (eight solo, six assists) and recorded 1 ½  sacks for 13 yards. Hayes scooped up a Maryville fumble late in the second quarter and returned it for 18 yards. The recovery set up Huntingdon's third touchdown to put the Hawks ahead 21-6.  

This is the third time Hayes has been named Defensive Player of the Week.

Williams, a native of Opp, Ala., also set a career-high with 13 tackles (seven solo, six assists) and had one tackle for loss. This is the second time Williams has been named Defensive Rookie of the Week.

Football Offensive Player of the Week
E'Montie Dears, Methodist - The sophomore running back from Florence, South Carolina set a new single-game program record with 208 yards rushing in a 38-6 victory over USA South rival Greensboro. Dears carried the ball 33 times for an average of 6.3 yards per rush and scored three touchdowns. Also Nominated: Joshua Long, Averett; Adrian Minondo, N.C. Wesleyan; Elijah Chenier, Maryville; Otis Porter, Huntingdon.

Football Offensive Rookie of the Week
Deandre Gillis, N.C. Wesleyan - The freshman running back from Hampton, Virginia turned in his second consecutive 100-yard rushing performance with 123 yards in a 49-23 victory over USA South foe LaGrange. Gillis carried the ball 21 times for an average of 5.9 yards per rush and scored two touchdowns. He also caught one pass for seven yards in the win. Also Nominated: Gianni Montgomery, Maryville; Brian Mann, Ferrum.

Football Defensive Player of the Week 
Trey Hayes, Huntingdon
 - The Decatur, Alabama sophomore linebacker collected 14 total tackles, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery in a 28-24 victory over USA South foe Maryville. Hays recorded eight solo tackles and six assisted takedowns while his sacks pushed Maryville back a total of 13 yards. Hayes' fumble recovery occurred in the second quarter and was returned 18 yards, setting up a Hawk score. Also Nominated: Blake Henderson, Maryville; Seth Brendle, Averett.

Football Defensive Rookie of the Week
Brandon Williams, Huntingdon - The Opp, Alabama freshman linebacker totaled 13 total tackles, one of which was for a loss of two yards, in a 28-24 win over USA South rival Maryville. Williams recorded seven solo tackles and six assisted takedowns. Also Nominated: Cedric Brown, Maryville; Hunter Hinson, Averett.

Football Special Teams Player of the Week
Ethan Williams, Maryville - The Knoxville, Tennessee sophomore kick returner totaled 89 return yards in a 28-24 loss to USA South foe Huntingdon. Williams had a long return of 49 yards which led to a Scot field goal. He also added three tackles, an interception and a pass break-up as a defensive back in the defeat.
