Huntingdon College releases 2017 football schedule

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon College athletic department officially released its 2017 football schedule on Wednesday.

The two-time defending USA South Athletic Conference champion Hawks will face a challenging schedule as they try to reach the NCAA Division III playoffs for a third straight season.

The Hawks will open the season with two non-conference games before closing the regular season with eight conference matchups.

"This schedule has some new challenges on it, as well as the familiar rivalries that our players, students and fans will recognize," Huntingdon head football coach Mike Turk said. "With two games being against teams with new head coaches and two games being against new opponents altogether, we certainly have a lot of work to do in order to prepare for the season."

Huntingdon will face two opponents for the first time in 2017. The Hawks open the season on Sept. 2 at home against Guilford College and will play at new conference member Brevard College on Sept. 30. Guilford was 4-6 last season but was 3-0 in games against USA South competition. Brevard was 1-9 as a Division II program in 2016 and is transitioning to Division III.

Huntingdon will maintain its in-state rivalry with Birmingham-Southern and will travel to the Panthers on Sept. 9. The Hawks open conference play at home on Sept. 16 against North Carolina Wesleyan and travel to Ferrum on Sept. 23.

Following the trip to Brevard, Huntingdon will play three of its final five games at home. The Hawks host Averett on Oct. 7 and Maryville on Oct. 14 before having a bye week. Huntingdon will close October with a trip to Greensboro on Oct. 28.

A home game with Methodist (Nov. 4) and a road trip to LaGrange (Nov. 11) will close out the regular season.
