Hayes, Young and Hering named All-Region

MINNEAPOLIS – Three Huntingdon players earned All-South Region recognition with the release of the D3football.com All-Region teams on Tuesday.

Senior linebacker Trey Hayes and senior kicker Chase Young were each named second-team All-Region and senior offensive guard Chris Hering earned third-team All-Region honors.

"This is a great recognition for all three of these guys and we're really proud of them," Huntingdon head coach Mike Turk said. "They have been solid players for us and you want to see guys like that recognized. Each one of them is what you look for as a football player, a leader and an ambassador for your program."

This is the eighth straight season the Hawks have had at least two All-Region performers. A total of 14 Huntingdon players have earned D3football.com All-Region honors since the All-Region teams began in 2005. Seven Hawks, including Hayes and Hering, have earned All-Region honors in multiple seasons.

Hayes joins former offensive lineman Chael Pridgen as just the second Hawk to earn All-Region recognition for three seasons. A two-time second-team selection and one-time third-team pick, Hayes started in 40 consecutive games and appeared in 43 games during his career.

A second-team preseason All-America selection as a senior, Hayes finished his career as Huntingdon's all-time leading tackler (310) and career leader in fumble recoveries (seven). As a senior, he averaged 9.8 tackles per game and finished with 88 tackles. He also had nine tackles for loss, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble.

Young is the first Huntingdon kicker to earn All-Region honors. As a senior, he made his final eight field goals to finish 8-for-10 for the season and was 41-for-43 on extra points.  

The USA South Athletic Conference's career scoring leader with 310 points, Young had a record-setting four seasons. He set USA South and Huntingdon career records with 208 extra points made and 34 field goals made, set the conference and Huntingdon season records for extra points made with 63 in 2015 and set the Huntingdon season record for field goals made with 13 in 2017.  

Hering, a third-team preseason All-America this season, earned third-team All-Region honors for a second straight season. After becoming the third Huntingdon offensive lineman to earn All-Region honors last season, Hering joins Pridgen as the only Huntingdon offensive linemen to earn the recognition in multiple seasons.

A three-year starter, Hering helped pave the way this season for an offense that averaged 470 yards per game and produced the third 1,000-yard rusher in program history. He graded out at 92-percent on more than 600 plays and had 48 knockdown blocks (5.3 per game).

Mary Hardin-Baylor running back Markeith Miller was named the South Region Offensive Player of the Year. Muhlenberg defensive end Frankie Feaster was chosen as the South Defensive Player of the Year and Johns Hopkins' Jim Margraff was selected as the South Coach of the Year.
