Hayes named second-team All-America by AFCA

WACO, Texas – Senior Trey Hayes joined a select group of Huntingdon football players with the announcement of the American Football Coaches Association Division III All-America teams on Monday.

Hayes was named second-team All-America at linebacker.

"Trey is a special kind of player that doesn't come along very often," Huntingdon head coach Mike Turk said. "He's been a steady performer during his whole career. It says a lot about the kind of player he is that he is our program's all-time leading tackler.

"Trey is a hard worker who was always prepared and ready to play. He didn't miss a game during his career and you knew that every Saturday when you lined up, he was going to be there and he was going to be making plays."

Hayes is the sixth Huntingdon player to earn postseason All-America or All-American recognition, but he is just the second Hawk to earn All-America recognition from the AFCA. Former Huntingdon defensive lineman D.J. Chappell was a first-team AFCA All-America in 2012.

A four-year starter, Hayes earned 40 consecutive starts and played in 43 games during his Huntingdon career. He earned recognition from the USA South Athletic Conference during each of his four seasons and is a three-time D3football.com All-Region selection.

As a senior, he recorded 88 tackles in nine games and averaged 9.8 tackles per game. He also had nine tackles for loss, a sack, an interception and a forced fumble. Hayes closed his career as the Hawks' career leader in tackles (310) and fumble recoveries (seven) and ranks third in tackles for loss (33).

The AFCA has selected an All-America team every year since 1945.
