Huntingdon men’s basketball comes up short at Hiwassee

MADISONVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Jason Varney scored a career-high 23 points and three other Hawks scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough for the Huntingdon men's basketball team on Saturday.

Hiwassee College took the lead in the final four minutes and held on to beat the Hawks 89-85.

Huntingdon (0-6) trailed 41-39 at halftime, but opened the second half with an 8-0 run. Huntingdon maintained a seven-point lead until midway through the second half before Hiwassee made a late push.

Behind Varney, Jeremiah Thomas added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks. Jerrod Lee followed with 15 points and Kanden Blackmon finished with 10 points.

Huntingdon returns to action in the Rhodes Christmas Invitational on Dec. 17. The Hawks play Rhodes at 7 p.m.
