Huntingdon men stumble in second half against Wittenberg

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Huntingdon men's basketball team played a strong first half against Wittenberg on Tuesday. But the Tigers used a big run to open the second half and knocked off the Hawks 75-62 in the first game of the James C. Campbell Memorial Classic at Maryville College.

The Hawks (1-8) trailed 30-26 at halftime and opened the second half with a Jason Varney layup to make it a two-point game. Wittenberg (8-3) answered with a 15-2 run to make it a 15-point game and led by 20 points midway through the second half.

Huntingdon pulled within 10 points twice in the final seven minutes, but the Hawks could not close the gap.

Varney finished with 18 points to lead the Hawks. D'Angelo Roberson added 10 points and six rebounds and Ryan Petty finished with eight points.

Clayton Black led Wittenberg with 18 points, Zack Leahy followed with 17 points and Alex Brandt added 16 points.

Huntingdon returns to action in the tournament on Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Rust College (5-8).
