Huntingdon men can’t pull off season sweep of Berry

ROME, Ga. – Courtnee Edgar sank two free throws with nine seconds to play to pull Huntingdon within two points of Berry College on Tuesday. But that was as close as the Hawks could get.

Berry's Jonathan Adams sank 1-of-2 free throws with seven seconds remaining and the Hawks missed a 3-point attempt with two seconds left as the Vikings held on for an 83-80 win.

This was the third time the two teams have met this season. Huntingdon (6-13) won 79-63 in December and 75-57 earlier in January.

The win was the second straight for Berry (2-17).

The Vikings built a 12-point lead in the first half and led by 13 early in the second half. The Hawks chipped away at Berry's lead and pulled within five points with 7:12 to play in the game. Berry answered and pulled back ahead to an 11-point lead.

The Hawks trailed 79-69 with 1:27 to play but outscored Berry 9-3 in the next minute to pull within four points and set up Edgar's final two free throws.

Jeremiah Thomas led Huntingdon with 23 points and 12 rebounds, his eighth double-double of the season. Jason Varney added 16 points and seven rebounds. Austin Hill followed with 14 points and Edgar finished with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Mac Whalen led Berry with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Nasser Almulla, Michael Schulte and Jonathan Abrams each scored 13 points and Cody Marsh added 12 points.

Huntingdon returns to conference play on Saturday at Maryville. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
