Huntingdon’s Hill, Davis and Pickens recognized on All-Conference teams
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Two Huntingdon men's basketball players and one women's basketball player were recognized with the release of the USA South's All-Conference teams on Wednesday.
On the men's side, senior Austin Hill was a first-team selection and sophomore Jerome Davis was a third-team choice. Junior Pat Pickens represented the Lady Hawks as a second-team selection.
"Austin and Jerome are both very deserving of this recognition," Huntingdon men's coach Mike Pugh said. "Both of them have worked hard and have been a key part of our success this season."
In 24 games this season, Hill is averaging 19.8 points and 7.3 per game and has hit 58-of-139 3-pointers. He is second in the conference in scoring average, fourth in rebounding and third in 3-pointers made.
Davis averaged 12.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 18 regular-season games. He is second on the Hawks' team in scoring average and is the team's leader in assists.
Senior Jason Varney was named to the men's All-Sportsmanship team.
The Hawks (10-14, 9-5 USA South) are the third seed entering the conference tournament in Maryville, Tenn. Huntingdon will play Methodist (10-15, 7-7) in the opening round at noon on Thursday.
Maryville's Jaumonee Byrd was named the Player of the Year and the Scots' Randy Lambert was chosen as the Coach of the Year. Greensboro College's Devan Gregory earned Rookie of the Year honors.
On the women's side, Pickens turned in seven double-doubles this season and tied or broke the Lady Hawks' single-game scoring record three times. She averaged 17 points and 8.5 rebounds per game (both were good for fifth in the conference) and led Huntingdon with 50 steals and 48 assists.
In addition to the program's single-game scoring record of 35 points, she owns the Lady Hawks' single-season scoring record of 424 points and is third in career points during the NCAA era with 976.
"Pat was a go-to player for us," Huntingdon women's coach Buzz Phillips said. "We could tell she was a special player when she got here as a freshman and she has only continued to develop during the past two seasons. We're glad we have her back for one more season."
Senior Jodie Thomas was named to the women's All-Sportsmanship team.
Maryville's Mackenzie Puckett was recognized as the Player of the Year and North Carolina Wesleyan's Kenyatta Harris was named the Rookie of the Year. Ferrum's Bryan Harvey was chosen as the Coach of the Year.
