Hawks hold off Sewanee for first win of the season

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Senior Alex Layson sank two free throws with 12 seconds left to help the Huntingdon men's basketball team pick up its first win of the season on Saturday.

Layson's two free throws put the Hawks ahead by seven points and Dantavius Washington added another free throw with three seconds left as the Hawks knocked off Sewanee 72-64.

Layson finished with a career-high 25 points, including a 12-of-13 performance from the free-throw line. Washington finished with 12 points and six rebounds and Jerome Davis and Andre Ashley both had 11 points, four rebounds and three assists.

After swapping leads for much of the first half, Huntingdon took a 19-17 lead on an Ashley layup with 6:30 left in the first half. The Hawks would not trail the remainder of the game.

Huntingdon (1-5) led 24-21 at the half. The Hawks used a 16-4 run to open the second half and built a 15-point lead, 40-25, with 13:51 left in the game.

Huntingdon led by at least eight points until the final minute of the game. Sewanee (2-3) tried to make a late push, but the Hawks were able to close out the game at the free-throw line.

In the final two minutes, Huntingdon hit 9-of-11 free throws. Layson was 5-for-6 on free throws in the final 1:23 of the game.

Huntingdon returns to action on Dec.19 in Atlanta against Centre.
