Hawks open conference play with win over Greensboro

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Jerome Davis and Raheem Berry combined for four free throws in the final six seconds to help the Huntingdon men's basketball team get by Greensboro 83-78 on Saturday afternoon.

Greensboro sank a 3-pointer to pull within a point, 79-78, with eight seconds to play. Davis sank two free throws with six seconds left and after a missed 3-point attempt by Greensboro, Berry's two free throws sealed the win with one second on the clock.

Saturday was the USA South Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Huntingdon (2-8) led for most of the game, held a 13-point lead midway through the second half and led by eight points in the final four minutes before Greensboro (7-5) rallied.

"It feels good to get the win, especially since it's a conference win," Huntingdon head coach Mike Pugh said. "The 28 turnovers we committed are going to keep me up tonight, but overall it was a great effort. We shot the ball well and we played well inside. We need to keep it up on Sunday."

The Hawks shot 58.2 percent from the field for the game and pulled down 43 rebounds to Greensboro's 33.

Dantavius Washington led Huntingdon with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Washington was 11-of-14 from the field. Andre Ashley followed with 17 points and Davis finished with 11 points, six assists and six rebounds. Alex Layson added nine points and six rebounds and Berry pulled down eight rebounds.

Huntingdon hosts Methodist (3-7, 0-1 USA South) on Sunday. The start time has changed from noon to 1 p.m.
