Men’s basketball battles to the buzzer with Averett

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's basketball team made a late run but couldn't overtake Averett in a 70-67 loss on Sunday.

The Hawks (2-12, 1-3 USA South) rallied from a 66-57 deficit in the final five minutes and pulled within a point, 68-67, with 1:05 to play. Averett (19-5, 4-1 USA South) answered and pulled ahead by three points with 41 seconds to play.

The Cougars missed two free throws with seven seconds left, giving Huntingdon one last chance. But the Hawks' 3-point attempt in the final seconds was off the mark.

Raheem Berry led the Hawks with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Andre Ashley had 14 points and eight rebounds. Jerome Davis finished with 11 points.

Averett took the lead in the opening seconds of the game, built a 14-point lead in the first half and led 41-30 at halftime. Huntingdon answered after halftime, tying the game in the first three minutes of the second half and taking its first lead less than six minutes into the second half. The Cougars regained the lead with 10:40 to play to set up the Hawks' late push.

Huntingdon hosts Birmingham-Southern on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
