McLean named USA South Rookie of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Freshman Brandon McLean was named a USA South Athlete of the Week on Monday.

McLean, a 6-foot-7 center from Ellenwood, Ga., was named Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week for his performances against Birmingham-Southern and Berry College this past week.

In Tuesday's night game versus Birmingham-Southern, McLean finished with six points, eight rebounds and one block in a 75-64 win.

McLean came up big for the Hawks in Saturday's 73-71 win over Berry College. McLean scored to tie the game with 1:01 to play and blocked two Berry shots in the final 53 seconds. McLean finished the game with a game-high nine rebounds and seven blocked shots to go with six points.

The freshman center is averaging 6.7 points, seven rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game this season.

Huntingdon will host Piedmont College on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Roland Arena.

Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Chase England, Piedmont - The junior forward from Oakwood, Georgia averaged a double-double of 16.0 points and 11.5 rebounds to go along with 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game as the Lions posted a 2-0 record last week. In an 85-64 win over Oglethorpe, England notched a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds to go along with three assists and two steals. In an 87-75 victory over Toccoa Falls, England totaled 14 points, eight rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. In a 75-64 victory over Birmingham Southern, McLean totaled six points, eight rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. In a 73-71 win over Berry, McLean scored six points, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked seven shots, dished out one assist and collected one steal. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

 

Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Mindy Brackins, Maryville - The Pigeon Forge, Tennessee junior guard averaged 25.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.0 steals as the Scots posted a 2-0 record last week at the North Central Tip-off Classic in Naperville, Illinois. In a 65-43 win over nationally-ranked Bethel, Brackins totaled 21 points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist. In an 87-85 victory over North Central, Brackins scored a career-high 30 points with four rebounds and two assists. She was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player for her efforts. Also Nominated: Jalisia Campbell, Methodist; Tenae McKinzie, William Peace; Kim Hinton, Meredith; Joelle Deese, Averett; Kemani Crawford, Ferrum; Mary Kate Rushton, Piedmont; Kenyata Harris, N.C. Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week
Joanna Smith, Covenant - The Chattanooga, Tennessee freshman guard averaged a double-double of 10.5 points and 12.0 rebounds to go along with 3.5 assists and 1.0 blocks per game last week as the Scots posted an 0-2 record, In a 75-68 loss at Sewanee, Smith totaled 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block. In a 73-60 loss at Oglethorpe, Smith notched her first career double-double with ten points and 15 rebounds to go along with three assists and one block.
