Second-half surge lifts Huntingdon over Brevard

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Huntingdon men's basketball team overcame a slow start Friday night and knocked off Brevard College 56-47.

After managing just six points in the first 12 minutes of the game and falling behind 24-6, the Hawks began to come alive late in the first half and took control in the second half.

Trailing 31-21 at halftime, Huntingdon outscored the Tornados 35-16 in the final 20 minutes. Huntingdon opened the second half with a 14-4 run and tied the game on a basket by John Jay Graves with 15:02 to play. A pair of free throws by Brandon McLean gave Huntingdon the lead for good.

The Hawks held Brevard scoreless for an almost six-minute stretch in the second half and built a 17-point lead in the final five minutes. A free throw by Aaron Washington capped a 33-6 run to make it a 54-37 game with 4:26 to play.

McLean finished with 10 points and eight rebounds and R.J. Jones was Huntingdon's leading scorer with 11 points. Scotty Chadwick added eight points and T.C. Elmore pulled down seven rebounds.

Quick Facts: With 46 rebounds against Brevard, Friday marked the fourth straight game and the 13th time in 17 games that Huntingdon has outrebounded its opponent this season. The Hawks lead the USA South and are second in Division III with an average of 46.6 rebounds per game.
