Hawks refuse to quit, knock off USA South West Division leader Maryville

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Junior Kyante Pines hit a 3-pointer with one second left in overtime to lift the Huntingdon men's basketball team to a 94-93 win over USA South West Division leader Maryville on Saturday.

As the seconds ticked down in overtime of a back-and-forth battle, Maryville took a 92-91 lead with 55 seconds to play and made it 93-91 with 20 seconds left.

After Maryville missed a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining, freshman Bryant Reid got the rebound for Huntingdon, junior Cam Boyd made the assist and Pines' 3-pointer sank Maryville's hopes.

The win snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Scots dating to the 2011-12 season. This was just the second conference loss for Maryville this season and snapped the Scots' 21-game home winning streak.

On a day when the Hawks could have given up early, the Huntingdon players refused to quit.

Huntingdon fell behind 9-0 to open the game and trailed by 10 points, 14-4, in the first four minutes. The Hawks played from behind for almost the entire first half, but only trailed 38-36 at halftime.

In the second half, Maryville pushed its lead back to 10 points in the first six minutes and held a 68-58 lead with 7:56 to play. That's when the Hawks made a late push.

Sparked by 12 points from Brandon McLean, six points from Pines and three points from Boyd, Huntingdon went on a 21-5 run and took a 79-73 lead with 2:12 left in regulation. Maryville sank 8-of-8 free throws in the final 94 seconds to tie the game 81-81 and force overtime.

McLean led all scorers and tied his career-high with 23 points. He also had 10 rebounds to finish with his eighth double-double of the season and his fourth double-double in the past six games.

Pines followed with 21 points, Isaiah King added 14 points and eight rebounds and Scotty Chadwick finished with 10 points and two blocked shots. Reid (six) and Boyd (five) combined for 11 of the Hawks' 17 assists.

Quick Facts: Maryville's loss on Saturday was jus the third for the Scots since November. Three of Maryville's six losses this season came in the first five games. The Scots had won 16 of the last 18 entering this weekend.
