Hawks take down Birmingham-Southern for first win of the season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Kyante Pines scored seven points in the final 91 seconds to help the Huntingdon men's basketball team beat Birmingham-Southern 94-90 on Friday night.

With a season-high 94 points, the win was the Hawks' third against the Panthers in the last four meetings.

In a back-and-forth game, Huntingdon tied the game 85-85 on a B.J. Barker 3-pointer with 2:06 to play. The Hawks took the lead for good on a free throw by Pines with 1:31 to play. Pines missed his second free throw, but got the putback to give the Hawks an 88-85 lead.

Pines sank four free throws in the final 40 seconds, with the last two making it a 92-87 game with 15 seconds to play. The Panthers hit a 3-pointer to cut it to two points with nine seconds left before Scotty Chadwick sealed the win with a dunk.

Pines led Huntingdon with 22 points and six rebounds and Isaiah King added 15 points. Jacob Champion finished with 12 points, James Harris had eight points and seven assists and Barker had eight points.

In the first half, Huntingdon had to rally from an 11-point deficit. Trailing 32-21 with 8:20 left in the opening half, the Hawks battled back and tied the game 42-42 just before halftime and trailed 47-44 at the half.

Huntingdon opened the second half with a 10-0 run as Champion hit a 3-pointer to tie the game and Pines scored seven straight points. Birmingham-Southern regained the lead three times during the second half but the Hawks were able to answer each time.
