Hawks taken down by Oglethorpe In Nail Biter

LAGRANGE- Ga.- Huntingdon Men's Basketball ( 2-2 overall) fell to the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels (2-2 Overall) 87-85 on day one of the LaGrange Tournament.

 

Highlights 

 

First Half

  • Oglethorpe came out hot, opening up a 10-4 lead with 15:40  remaining in the half.

  • A three-pointer from Chase Dumas and a layup from Nate Johns reduced the Petrel lead to 13-11 with 14:03 remaining in the half.

  • Freshman guard BJ Brown scored a layup at the 13:31 mark, evening the score at 13.

  • A 4-0 swing led by guards Max Gardner and BJ Brown gave the Hawks their first lead of the game, 20-18 with 8:21 remaining in the half.

  • Down 35-29, two free throws from Huntingdon center Randall Davis brought the Hawks within four going into halftime, down 35-31.

Second Half

  • Huntingdon started the second half out fast, going on a 9-0 run with points coming from Myles Murphy, Tate Goolsby, and Jaylen Washington, giving the Hawks a 40-37 lead with 18:10 remaining in the half.

  • A 5-2 run put Oglethorpe back in the lead with 14:32 remaining, 50-46, but a three pointer from Daquan Hawkins put Huntingdon back within 1, 50-49.

  • With 13:23 remaining in the half, sophomore guard Myles Murphy drilled a huge three pointer, putting Huntingdon ahead 54-53.

  • Even at 56,  Blu Crawford would score a layup and get fouled. He missed the free throw, but Myles Murphy was able to secure the offensive rebound and put it back in,giving Huntingdon a 60-56 lead with 11:55 remaining in the half.

  • A 10-0 Stormy Petrel run put Oglethorpe back in front, leading 66-60 with 10:32 remaining.

  • With 7:20 remaining, two free throws from Randall Davis put Huntingdon back ahead 68-67.

  • Down 76-69 with 5:37 remaining, Huntingdon went on a 9-3 run, with a three point shot from BJ Brown bringing the Hawks within one, down 79-78 with 2:56 left in the game.

  • A layup from Randall Davis at the 1:40 mark gave Huntingdon back the lead 82-81.

  • Down 84-83 with 11 seconds remaining in the game, a layup from Max Gardner put Huntingdon ahead 85-84.

  • On the following possession, the Hawks forced a miss, but could not control the rebound, allowing for Oglethorpe to make the go ahead three as time expired, making the final score 87-85.

 

Key Notes 

  • The Hawks turned the ball over 14 times to Oglethorpe's 9.

  • Huntingdon outrebounded the Stormy Petrels 48-27.

  • 36 of Huntingdon's points came from the bench

  • Huntingdon scored 15 more points in the paint than Oglethorpe, holding a 44-29 advantage.
