Huntingdon men’s golf in 12th after Round 1 of D3 Preview tournament
HOWEY IN THE HILLS, Fla. – Huntingdon junior Sam Strachan shot an even-par 72 and is in fourth after the first round of the Gordin Classic NCAA D3 National Championship Preview at Mission Inn Resort & Club.
Greensboro's Ben Nihart leads the field with a 5-under 67. Dennis Granath (St. John's University) and Mike Duncan (Methodist University) each shot a 1-under 71 and are tied for second.
Methodist University leads the team standings with a 4-over 292 and Illinois Wesleyan is second with a 7-over 295. Huntingdon was in third, but an error on a score card dropped the Hawks to 12th.
Sophomore Jamey Lester inadvertently signed an inaccurate scorecard and was disqualified for the first round. Losing Lester's score dropped Huntingdon nine spots in the standings.
Lester will be eligible to play in the remainder of the tournament.
Huntingdon freshman Steven Smith shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for 16th. Freshman Thomas Mitchell is tied for 40th at 5-over 77 and sophomore Griffin Just is tied for 80that 10-over 82.
The second round of the tournament is on Monday.
