Huntingdon men’s golf places 2nd in GSAC tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Three Huntingdon golfers placed in the top five and the men's team finished second in the Great South Athletic Conference tournament.

As a team, the Hawks shot 301 at Wynlakes Golf & Country Club on Tuesday and finished the two-day tournament with a score of 614. LaGrange won the GSAC title with a two-round total of 592. The Panthers shot 291 in the final round.

Huntingdon sophomore Jamey Lester shot a 2-over-par 74 on Tuesday and finished in third place with a two-round score of 150. LaGrange took the top two individual spots with Hudson Keener shooting a 1-under 143 and Cory Howard shooting an even-par 144.

Huntingdon's Sam Strachan and Thomas Mitchell each tied for fifth at 153. The two Hawks both shot 3-over 75 in the final round.

By finishing in the top five, Lester, Strachan and Mitchell each earned All-Conference honors. The complete list of All-Conference awards will be released by the GSAC at a later date.

Rounding out Huntingdon's scores were Tyler Schmutz at 158 and Steven Smith at 162.

The Hawks will now await the selection announcement for the NCAA Division III National Championships in early May. The Division III National Championships will be held at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howley-in-the-Hills, Fla., on May 15-18.
