Mitchell’s 67 leads Huntingdon in second round of National Championship
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – Huntingdon freshman Thomas Mitchell shot his best collegiate round and the Huntingdon golf team climbed nine spots in the second round of the NCAA Division III National Championship.
Mitchell fired a 5-under-par 67 on Wednesday on the Las Colinas Course at Mission Inn Resort and Huntingdon shot the second lowest round of the day with a 289. Transylvania turned in a 288 for the best round on Wednesday.
"Thomas' round was huge for us. That's the kind of round we've been waiting for out of our guys this year," Huntingdon head coach Matt Mahanic said. "As a team, I thought we kept our composure pretty well. We made two triple bogeys today, which bothers me, but we played better than in the first round. We're in position to go out and get back in the hunt. But we've got to eliminate our mistakes and stay hungry."
Entering Thursday's third round, the Hawks are tied for 11th with a two-round total of 598. Oglethorpe leads the tournament at 577 and Methodist is second at 591. Following Wednesday's round, the top 15 teams advanced in the tournament. The remaining 26 teams are finished.
Mitchell and Huntingdon junior Sam Strachan are tied for eighth individually at 1-over 145 after 36 holes. Mitchell shot a 6-over 78 on Tuesday. Strachan shot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday and a 1-under 71 on Wednesday.
Oglethorpe's Anthony Maccaglia has the individual lead at 5-under 139. Three golfers are tied for second at 2-under 142.
Behind Mitchell and Strachan, sophomore Jamey Lester shot a 2-over 74 on Wednesday and is tied for 69th at 153. Junior Tyler Schmutz has a 155 after two rounds and freshman Steven Smith is at 160 after 36 holes.
Huntingdon is paired with Christopher Newport and Gustavus Adolphus in Thursday's round. Huntingdon begins teeing off on the El Campeon Course at 7:50 a.m. CST.
