Men’s golf tied for 23rd after Rd. 1 of Jekyll Island Collegiate

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's golf team shot 310 in the first round of the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on Friday.

Entering Saturday's second round, the Hawks are tied for 23rd. LaGrange leads the 30-team field at 289, Illinois Wesleyan is second at 290 and Methodist is third at 291.

Senior Griffin Just led the Hawks with a 4-over-par 76, senior Rodes Bowers followed with a 5-over 77, junior Steven Smith shot a 6-over 78 and senior Jamey Lester shot a 7-over 79. Freshman Will Thrash finished with an 8-over 80.

Oglethorpe's Anthony Maccaglia shot a 4-under-par 68 for the low round on Friday.

"This was a tough day for the guys. We got off to a horrible start and we didn't recover," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "The guys have been working extremely hard and we felt like we were as prepared as we could be for this event. But getting off to another bad start just deflated us. It's really frustrating, but we're going to keep working and try to improve in Round 2."
