Three Hawks within five strokes of 1st in Royal Lakes Invitational

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. – Two Huntingdon freshmen and a sophomore are among a crowded field within five strokes of first after the first round of the Royal Lakes Invitational on Monday.

Playing as an individual, freshman Alan Anderson is two strokes off the lead and tied for eighth with an even-par 72. Sophomore Will Thrash is tied for 13th with a 1-over 73 and freshman Peter Scrimgeour is tied for 31st with a 3-over 75.

Entering Tuesday's final round, five golfers are tied for first at 2-under 70.

As a team, the Hawks are 14 strokes off the lead and in eighth at 304. Centre College leads the team standings with a 2-over 290, LaGrange is one shot back and in second at 291 and Oglethorpe is third at 292.

Rounding out Huntingdon's team scores, freshman Jon Colten Stanaland and junior David James each shot 6-over 78 and senior Steven Smith shot 81. Playing as an individual, freshman Seth Johnson shot 84.

"We had an up and down day," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "We made the turn with five birdies in three holes and I was thinking 'here we go'. But we gave it right back on the next few holes. It's frustrating for the boys, but we are trying to work and focus on the positives.

"I couldn't be happier with the play of Alan Anderson. With the added pressure of this being his first collegiate event, he performed in great style. He hit the ball fantastically and executed his plan. It's awesome to see a freshman bring that kind of fight."
