Thrash, Hawks lead after Rd. 1 of Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's golf team closed the fall season with its first tournament win since the 2010-11 season.

After the first round of the spring season, the Hawks are in position to try for a second straight win. Huntingdon shot a 1-over-par 289 on Monday in the opening round of the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate.

The Hawks lead second-place Greensboro by two strokes entering Tuesday's final round. Oglethorpe is third at 5-over 293.

"This was a solid day for the boys," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "We had a hiccup on the back nine but we finished strong with two birdies. It's going to be fun to have a run at another tournament title tomorrow."

Huntingdon junior Will Thrash turned in his best collegiate round with a 3-under 69. He was one of three Hawks to break par on Monday. Junior Addison Lambeth shot a 1-under 71 and, playing as an individual, sophomore Jon Colten Stanaland also shot 1-under 71. Lambeth and Stanaland are tied for fourth.

"Will and Addison are both proving they are two of the top players in Division III golf and I'm expecting another good performance from them in the final round," Schreyer said. "I'm also looking for Jon to back up his first round with another great round on Tuesday. Jon has been really close all spring so I was not surprised to see him perform at a high level."

Freshman Stephen Shephard matched his best collegiate round with a 2-over 74 on Monday, followed by junior Chad Ring with a 3-over 75 and senior David James with a 78.

Playing as an individual, junior Wesley Etheredge shot an 84.
