Huntingdon sweeps USA South Golfers of the Week honors

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – After winning the Callaway Gardens Intercollegiate on Tuesday, the sixth ranked Huntingdon men's golf team earned more honors on Wednesday.

With the release of the USA Golfers of the Week, Huntingdon junior Will Thrash earned Golfer of the Week and freshman Stephen Shephard was named Golf Rookie of the Week.

In addition to the individual recognitions, Huntingdon, which entered the tournament ranked No. 10 in the Golfstat Division III national rankings, climbed to No. 6 in the latest rankings.

Thrash, a native of Prattville, Ala., picked up his first collegiate win on Tuesday with a 3-under-par 141. On Monday, he turned in his best collegiate round with a 3-under-69 and shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday.

Shephard finished tied for 29th with a two-day score of 151. He opened the tournament by matching his best collegiate round with a 2-over 74. On Tuesday, the Niceville, Fla. native closed the tournament by shooting a 5-over 77.

Golfer of the Week
Will Thrash, Huntingdon - The junior from Prattville, Alabama finished first out of 141 golfers at the Callaway Gardens Invitational in Pine Mountain, Georgia last week by shooting a three-under par 141. It is Thrash's first collegiate tournament win. In the two-day event, Thrash opened with a career-best three-under par 69 and finished with an even par 72. His performance helped the Hawks to a first place team finish. Also Nominated: Davis Jensen, Methodist.

 

Golf Rookie of the Week
Stephen Shephard, Huntingdon - The freshman from Niceville, Florida finished tied for 29th out of 141 golfers at the Callaway Gardens Invitational in Pine Mountain, Georgia last week by shooting a seven-over par 151. In the two-day event, Shephard opened with two-over par 74 and finished with a five-over par 77. His performance helped the Hawks to a first place team finish.
