Hawks, Lambeth place 2nd in NCAA Tournament

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Huntingdon men's golf team turned in its best finish of the NCAA era with a second-place performance in the Division III Men's Golf Championships on Friday.

The Hawks shot 307 in the final round and 1204 for the tournament. Huntingdon finished six strokes out of first. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps captured the national title with a four-round total of 1198.

The Hawks' previous best finish in the NCAA Tournament was a third-place finish in 2010.

"This is an exciting time for our program," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "Our motto is 'We fight until we sign' and our guys did just that. It was so much fun to be in the position to have a chance at winning a national title. We are getting stronger every year and we're going to keep building next year."

Huntingdon junior Addison Lambeth, who earned first-team All-American honors, tied for second. Lambeth's finish is tied for the highest by a Hawk during the NCAA era. Former Huntingdon All-American Jacob Collinsworth tied for second in 2007.

Lambeth shot a 2-over-par 74 on Friday and closed the 72-hole tournament in a three-way tie for first with an 8-over-par 295. Virginia Wesleyan's Evan Cox captured medalist honors in a playoff. Lambeth and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Alex Wrenn tied for second.

"Congratulations to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on its championship and to Evan Cox for his individual performance. They are deserving champions," Lambeth said. "I believe this experience is going to make our team better. Finishing second just makes the fire in all of us stronger for next year. We will be back and we will be better next year."

Huntingdon made a strong push during the final two rounds at Midvale Country Club. Huntingdon trailed Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by 15 strokes after the second round and trailed by nine strokes entering the final round. The Hawks' 307 in the final round was tied for the third best round on Friday.

Two Hawks finished in the top-12 of the standings. In addition to Lambeth, junior Will Thrash tied for 12th with a four-round score of 301.

Junior Chad Ring shot a 3-over 75 in the final round and tied for 27th with a 305. Freshman Stephen Shephard tied for 40th with a 309 and senior David James tied for 55th with a 312.

"These guys really wanted this and I know they are disappointed we didn't win," Schreyer said. "But I know it will fuel them to bring a better package of skills to the table next year. It's good to be a Hawk."
