Hawks build 25-stroke lead in first two rounds of Gordin Classic

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Huntingdon men's golf team turned in a dominant performance in the first two rounds of the Gordin Collegiate Classic on Sunday.

In a 12-team field that features seven of the top-10 teams in Division III and 10 nationally ranked teams, the Hawks turned in two of their best rounds in the NCAA era and built a 25-stroke lead.

Senior Will Thrash turned in the best round by a Hawk during the NCAA era, two other Hawks shot their best collegiate rounds, one shot his second best round and another turned in his third best collegiate round.

Thrash and fellow seniors Addison Lambeth and Chad Ring are first, second and fifth respectively and all five Hawks are in the top-24 in the field of 59 golfers.

Entering Monday's final round at the Delaware Golf Club, Huntingdon is first with a 17-under-par 551 after 36 holes. Fourth-ranked Oglethorpe is second with an 8-over 576 and Ohio Wesleyan is third at 12-over 580.

"This was a long day of 36 holes, but I couldn't be happier with our performance," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "Everyone contributed today and we made a ton of birdies. When you are 17-under on a Donald Ross-designed course, you're playing well. I'm so proud of this team. This may be our best 18-hole performance during the NCAA era."

Huntingdon shot 5-under 279 in the first round and 12-under 272 in the second round. According to Golfstat, the 272 is the lowest 18-hole total for the Hawks during the NCAA era. The Hawks' 279 in Round 1 was two strokes off the previous NCAA-era record. Huntingdon shot 277 during the 2006-07 season.

Sunday's 551 is 18 strokes better than Huntingdon's previous NCAA-era record for 36 holes.

Thrash fired a 6-under-par 65 in the second round. According to Golfstat, this is the first 65 for the Hawks since becoming an NCAA program. The 6-under ties former golfers David James, Josh Moore and Matt Mahanic for the best round versus par during the NCAA era.

Thrash shot a 1-under 70 in the first round and leads the field with a 7-under 135. The 135 is two strokes off the Hawks' NCAA-era record for 36 holes set by Lambeth last season.

Lambeth fired a 3-under 68 in each round and is in second at 6-under 136. In his second season with the Hawks, Lambeth has shot 68 or better in five rounds with Huntingdon.

Ring shot an even-par 71 in the first round, followed with a 2-under 69 in Round 2 and is in fifth with a 2-under 140. Ring's 69 is one stroke off his best round as a Hawk.

Freshman Alex Aulerich turned in his best collegiate round with a 1-under 70 in Round 2. Aulerich shot 4-over 75 in Round 1 and is tied for 15th at 3-over 145.
