Huntingdon wins Gordin Collegiate Classic by 30 strokes

DELAWARE, Ohio – The Huntingdon men's golf team placed three golfers in the top four and won the Gordin Collegiate Classic by 30 strokes on Monday.

One of seven top-10 nationally ranked teams in the field, the third-ranked Hawks built a 25-stroke lead after the first two rounds. Huntingdon shot 12-over-par 296 in the final round and finished with a 5-under 847.

Fourth-ranked Oglethorpe was second with a 25-over 877 and seventh-ranked Rhodes College was third with a 26-over 878.

Huntingdon's 54-hole total of 847 set a new NCAA-era record for the Hawks. The previous record of 864 was set during the 2008-09 season.

"The weather was not cooperating today but somehow we finished," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "We came out flat today, but we fought through the conditions and managed to push our lead to 30 strokes. It was cool to see our guys finish second, third and fourth. This is a great win and an exciting start to the season."

Individually, seniors Addison Lambeth, Will Thrash and Chad Ring finished second, third and fourth. Centre's Carson Riley was the medalist with a 5-under 208 for the tournament.

Lambeth, who shot 3-under 68 in each of the first two rounds, turned in a 3-over 74 in the final round and finished two strokes out of first at 3-under 210. Lambeth's three-round total tied Huntingdon's NCAA-era record for 54 holes set by Mack Duke during the 2008-09 season.

Thrash finished one stroke behind Lambeth at 2-under 211. A day after shooting a 1-under 70 and a Huntingdon NCAA-era record 6-under 65, Thrash closed the tournament with a 5-over 76.

Ring led Huntingdon in the final round with a 1-over 72 and finished third with a 1-under 212. Ring shot an even-par 71 and a 2-under 69 in the first two rounds.

Freshman Alex Aulerich tied for 11th with a 6-over 219. Aulerich shot 4-over 75 and 1-under 70 on Sunday and closed the tournament with a 3-over 74 on Monday. Junior Jon Colten Stanaland shot an 84 in the final round and finished tied for 48th with a 232.

Huntingdon returns to action on Oct. 9 in the Golfweek D3 Preview in Destin, Fla.
