Shephard’s 2nd-place finish leads Hawks in USA South Tournament

LAGRANGE, Ga. – Huntingdon sophomore Stephen Shephard turned in his best collegiate round on Saturday and finished three strokes out of first in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament.

Shephard shot a 4-under-par 68 in the final round and finished second with a 4-under 212 in three rounds. LaGrange's Logan Lanier was the tournament medalist with a 7-under 209.

As a team, top-ranked Huntingdon shot 294 in the final round and finished third with a three-round total of 19-over 883. Fourth-ranked Methodist won the conference title with a 7-over 871.

Tenth-ranked Greensboro was second with a 14-over 878. Sixth-ranked LaGrange finished one stroke behind Huntingdon with a 20-over 884.

"It was an unfortunate week for us," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "We just could not get it together. Coming off two big wins, I think our expectations were high. But when things did not go as planned, we got very frustrated. That's never good in this sport.

"All I can ask is that we are prepared and I know we were. It was just a bad week."

Behind Shephard, senior Addison Lambeth tied for 13th with an 8-over 224 and senior Chad Ring tied for 17th with a 9-over 225. Sophomore Mark Connelly tied for 19th with an 11-over 227 and senior Will Thrash tied for 25th with a 13-over 229.
