Huntingdon ties for fourth in NCAA Tournament

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. – The Huntingdon men's golf team shot a 12-over-par 300 in the final round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championship on Friday.

The Hawks finished with a four-round total of 1190 and tied for fourth in the 18-team field at Mission Inn Resort & Club. Wittenberg University captured its first title with a 28-over-par 1180. Guilford College was second at 1182 and the University of Texas-Tyler was third at 1188. Greensboro tied for fourth with the Hawks at 1190.

Senior Addison Lambeth, who received first-team All-American honors on Friday, and sophomore Stephen Shephard led Huntingdon and tied for ninth at 5-over 293. Hope College's Josh Gibson and Wittenberg's Garrett Brickley each finished at 1-under 287. Gibson won the individual title in a one-hole playoff.

"It was a great year. We just didn't have our 'A' game at the end of the season," Huntingdon Director of Golf Dave Schreyer said. "You must be healthy and play well to win a championship. Unfortunately, we had some injuries and illness and that's all it takes to sideline a run.

"But it was a great year and being ranked No. 1 all year was a great accomplishment. This group of seniors (Lambeth, Will Thrash and Chad Ring) meant a lot to our program and we hope our younger golfers will continue to build off of what these guys have done."

This is the second straight season the Hawks have finished in the top four in the NCAA Tournament. Huntingdon was the runner-up in 2016.

Despite finishing fourth, Huntingdon's 1190 this season was 14 strokes better than last season's score in the NCAA Tournament and was the fourth best 72-hole total for Huntingdon during the NCAA era.

Lambeth and Shephard' four-round totals of 293 are tied for the third best 72-hole total by Huntingdon golfers during the NCAA era. Lambeth shot a 2-over 74 in the final round and Shephard shot a 3-over 75 on Friday.

Ring closed his Huntingdon career with a 78 in the final round and tied for 42nd with a 16-over 304. Junior Jon Colten Stanaland also shot 78 in the final round and tied for 46th with a 17-over 305. Thrash shot the Hawks' best round on Friday with a 1-over 73 and finished tied for 54th with a 19-over 307.
