Shephard’s win leads Hawks in DIII Golfweek Fall Invitational

DESTIN, Fla. – Junior Stephen Shephard earned his second career win and the second-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team placed second in the Division III Golfweek Fall Invitational on Tuesday.

Shephard, a day after tying his best collegiate round with a 3-under-par 68, fired another 3-under 68 in the final round and finished the three-round tournament with an 8-under 205.

The 205 is the best three-round total by a Hawk during the NCAA era. Former Hawks Addison Lambeth and Mack Duke shared the previous record of 210.

As a team, Huntingdon shot 8-over 292 in the final round and 12-over 864 for the tournament. The 864 is tied for the second best three-round total by the Hawks during the NCAA era.

Huntingdon finished seven strokes out of first as the University of St. Thomas (Minnesota) shot 857 to win the tournament. Fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan finished one stroke behind Huntingdon in third with a 13-over 865.

Behind Shephard, senior Jon Colten Stanaland tied for eighth with a 2-over 215. Stanaland shot 2-over 73 in the final round. Junior Mark Connelly shot a 5-over 76 in the final round and finished tied for 32nd with an 8-over 221.

Junior Wyatt Adkison shot a 4-over 75 in the final round and tied for 46th with a three-round 224. Freshman Thomas Gerard rounded out the Hawks' top-five with a three-round 229.

 

Director of Golf Dave Schreyer on the tournament: "This was not the solid day we wanted as a team, but I'm really proud of Stephen. He played a tremendous three rounds for us.

"We will have a quick turnaround this week and possibly a lineup change before the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial. But we are looking forward to the final tournament of the fall."

 

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial on Oct. 23-24.
