Second-ranked Hawks in 12th after Rd. 1 of Jekyll Island Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The second-ranked Huntingdon men's golf team shot a 12-over-par 300 in the opening round of the Jekyll Island Invitational on Friday.

In a 30-team field that features 14 top-25 teams, Huntingdon is 12th entering Saturday's second round.

Fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan leads the tournament with an even-par 288. Kenyon College is second with a 2-over 290 and 22nd-ranked Southwestern University is third with a 3-over 291.

Oglethorpe's Jacob Arnett and Guilford's James Mishoe each shot 5-under 67 on Friday and are tied for first. A total of 19 players shot par or better in the opening round.

Junior Mark Connelly led the Hawks with a 1-over 73 and is tied for 20th. Juniors Stephen Shephard and Henry Gee each shot a 3-over 75 and are tied for 43rd. Sophomore Drew Mathers shot a 5-over 77 and senior Jon Colten Stanaland shot a 6-over 78.

 

Director of Golf Dave Schreyer on Friday's round: "Today was just a poor day for us. We made too many mistakes. We're going to have to put those behind us and have a better performance in the next two rounds."

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in Round 2 of the Jekyll Island Invitational on Saturday.
