Second-ranked Hawks climb to 8th after Rd. 2 at Jekyll Island

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's golf team shaved 13 strokes off its first round score and shot a 1-under-par 287 on Saturday in the second round of the Jekyll Island Invitational.

Entering Sunday's final round, the second-ranked Hawks are 13 strokes out of first and in eighth place with an 11-over 587.

In a 30-team field that includes 14 top-25 teams, fifth-ranked Methodist leads the tournament with a 1-under 575 and 14th-ranked Guilford is second with a 4-over 580.

Three Hawks shot par or better in Saturday's round. Senior Jon Colten Stanaland shot a 2-under 70 and juniors Mark Connelly and Henry Gee each shot even-par 72.

After two rounds, Connelly is tied for 16th and eight strokes out of first with a 1-over 145. Gee is tied for 25th with a 3-over 147 and Stanaland is tied for 35th with a 4-over 148.

Junior Stephen Shephard is also tied for 35th with a 4-over 148. Shephard shot a 1-over 73 on Saturday. Sophomore Drew Mathers is at 9-over 153 after two rounds.

Guilford's James Mishoe leads the field with a 7-under 137.

 

Director of Golf Dave Schreyer on Friday's round: "We played better today. The guys are all hitting the ball really well, but our play around the greens has been abysmal. We're going to need a low round on Sunday."

Coming Up: Huntingdon will play in the final round of the Jekyll Island Invitational on Sunday.
