Second-ranked Hawks finish strong in Jekyll Island Invitational

JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. – The Huntingdon men's golf team climbed five spots in the final round and placed third in the Jekyll Island Invitational on Sunday.

Huntingdon, which was in 12th after Round 1 and eighth after Round 2, fired a season-best 6-under-par 282 in the final round. The second-ranked Hawks finished the tournament with a 5-over 869.

Fifth-ranked Methodist won the tournament with an 11-under 853 and 14th-ranked Guilford was second with an even-par 864. The 30-team tournament featured 14 top-25 teams.

Four Hawks shot under-par in the final round. Junior Mark Connelly and senior Jon Colten Stanaland each shot 2-under 70 on Sunday and junior Stephen Shephard and sophomore Drew Mathers both shot 1-under 71. Junior Henry Gee shot a 1-over 73.

For the tournament, Connelly finished tied for 13th with a 1-under 215, Stanaland tied for 20th with a 2-over 218, Shephard tied for 26th with a 3-over 219, Gee tied for 31st with a 4-over 220 and Mathers tied for 54th with an 8-over 224.

Guilford's James Mishoe was the tournament medalist with a 10-under 206.

 

Director of Golf Dave Schreyer on Friday's round: "We played well today. We made a few mistakes, but all five guys played well. Six-under is a good day of golf."

Coming Up: Huntingdon will host the Wynlakes Intercollegiate on March 26-27.
